Backroads

A decent road movie that would've gotten too repetitive if it were feature length. The tragic ending echoes the endings of Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider, making this film firmly connect the New Hollywood wave to the Australian New Wave and the cross-cultural (or cultural imperialistic) similarities.

Rough, tough little Aussie film is a little too crudely executed to be entirely successful, but Hunter's typically professional, well-heeled performance as an unrepentant racist counterbalances some of the other borderline amateurish elements (including an incoherency in plotting, and many of the performances from the other cast members). Leads to a morally dubious conclusion to boot.
