Babylon

A minor feeling film that builds its strength up with time. Some of the characters are a little underdeveloped, and it probably could have been longer. Nonetheless quite a cool indie flick that offers a singular representation of the UK dub scene in its budding years. In that somewhat unique context the familiar backdrop of racism and violence gets a slightly altered treatment through our highly sympathetic ganja-smoking protagonist. Epic finale. Jah Shaka!

Naturalistic snapshot of time and place with connections to universal issues of racism and alienation. Beautifully shot by Menges who maintains the realism of South London locations while imbuing it with an epic quality. Behind the direction of Rosso, Menges expertly guides the camera to ratchet up the tension through the claustrophobia of urban poverty and conflict. Performances do well with a screenplay that's a little bit paint-by-numbers. Great watch as time capsule and ongoing struggle.

Brilliant technic and impressive ending with unacceptable disconnections in story.
