The series was already wearing thin by this point, with whatever cleverness or heart the original had replaced with a cavalcade of more lazy sex jokes and gross-out gags. Far more eye-rolling than gut-busting.

Comedy sequels are hard, because you are have to replicate what people enjoy about the last film (in the form of repeating jokes), and also add new layers. This mostly succeeds. Since this is 1999, the film opens with a Jerry Springer scene, and then a joke about Starbucks. This film had a ton of kids running around talking about "mojo" not knowing what it meant.

If I'd watched the series out of order and took in this movie having never seen the first, I actually might prefer it. It rehashes a lot of the same jokes in bigger and better ways -- the opening title sequence, for example, takes the sexual sight gags of the first film (ie. holding up melons to cover breasts) to dazzling new heights, and it is hilarious. But at the end of the day, a rehash is still a rehash. It's pretty funny, but not all that great.

Heather Graham, although cute and sexy as anything, is not a very good actress, and this is probably some of her worst work. She can't stop looking amused at everything Myers does, and seems to forget that she's supposed to be acting as well. Otherwise, a fairly funny movie, especially just about everything concerning Dr. Evil.

The Austin Powers is definitely an exercise in diminishing returns and the second film rehashes a lot of the same jokes from the first film, while perhaps venturing a little further into gross-out humor with the introduction of Fat Bastard. Myers again plays multiple roles and his charm and comedic timing does carry a lot of the scenes, but the movie still doesn't do much with a lot of its joke potential and definitely goes for the easy, low-hanging comedic fruit whenever possible.

The middle of the trio is probably the best of the three. It does the things you expect from a sequel and also furthers the hilarity of Austin Powers through fresh and over the top humour courtesy of Mike Myers. One of my all time favorite comedy series. I thought I would have ranked this sooner in all honesty.

The Spy Who Shagged Me is a much more consistently funny film. Using Myers' talents to full effect as best it can. The plot works well enough to keep things different and interesting. If anything it feels to be on par with the original, though simply not as memorable.

The Spy Who Shagged Me is one of those movies that is better than it's predecessor. Mike Myers is back in the second of his Austin Powers series and he is both funny and charming. He is great at characters and Fat Bastard is a very funny character. I'm not sure how well it's held up, but I still chuckled at the standard lines. Heather Graham was a good addition for this movie. I like the mix of America and Britain. Verne Troyer as Mini Me was another great character that debuted in this film.

There's nary a hint of a substantial plot or complex characters here, but with an ample amount of often surprisingly clever humour (the synonyms for penis gags are great), the film manages to get by on pure silliness-and a good amount of self-aware jabs at its own shoddy storytelling don't hurt either ("... just enjoy yourself!"). The multiple-character Myers is undeniably creative and while not all of his jokes land on their feet, enough do to overshadow the film's lack of anything else.

The Spy Who Shagged Me is one of the most memorable film titles of the 90's, but otherwise this sequel is a mediocre Austin Powers feature. Mike Myers is great again as Austin Powers, Dr. Evil & now the addition of Fat Bastard. And the introduction of Verne Troyer as Mini Me was certainly memorable. Will Ferrell is great too. But otherwise the humour is repetitive and although it's enjoyable, it's beginning to ware thin. There are several nods, references and gags to chuckle at once agin though.

I'll never get why some comedy sequels can rely on almost entirely the same jokes as the original and still be funny, like here, whereas that strategy usually falls really flat. Powers and Dr. Evil are both such fun characters that it's hard not to want more after the first.

Considering the success of the first one and that there were so many sequels in the Bond series they could still lampoon this almost had to happen. It's still pretty funny, but doesn't hit the level of the first. Part of the problem is it brings back so many gags and jokes from the first that unless you hadn't seen the first one in awhile it feels incredibly derivative.

Myers's one-joke comedy is stretched into a sequel. And not only has the richest source of material already been pretty well tapped out -- the anachronism of a swinging Bondian superspy in the Nineties -- it is now also pretty well abandoned, with nothing comparable to take its place, once the hero returns via time machine to his proper period.

Myers wisely highlights the not-so-good Dr., along with some hilarious new characters, instead of the periodically wearisome Powers. Again plot takes a back seat to the great dialogue, characters (including Lowe doing a dead-on Robert Wagner and a third Myers incarnation, Fat Bastard), and kitchy eye candy. It all still works because of Myers' winking good nature.
