Au bord du lac

1994
Short Film

The film is composed of mundane, everyday scenes of recreation and leisure on an idyllic, sunny day at a park that overlooks a lake - rowing a boat, playing a game of volleyball, rollerskating, bicycling, reading a newspaper, sunbathing, riding on horseback, or strolling on the promenade - shot through optical distortions to create fractured and knotted images that resemble embellished, gothic fairytale illustrations or appear to resolve into morphing, geometric patterns of fluid motion. Very neatly edited, with a strong rhythmic element. I guess it's vaguely interesting that whatever technique is being used to distort the images of mundane goings on results in something comparable to biomorphic surrealism. But, with regard to that technique, I just don't like it very much.

Bokanowski's distortions smear his vaguely recognizable human (and animal) subjects into whorls of fluid, abstract motion, set to a polyrhythmic beat. Groovy.

lovely use of a strange technique that produces a highly painterly effect on the image.

Too bad it's absolutely pointless.

A striking visual experiment: unique, fluid images that are to some extent reminiscent of Tanguy.
