Given Joe Cornish's previous work, I think a lot of people might have been expecting a much broader comedy piece, or perhaps in a pastiche of the sci-fi-horror genre. Instead is a fine work of imaginative sci-fi with occasional moments of light relief. It has a solid premise, a story that plays that premise out, and is full of impressive performances. Particularly from the younger cast members. A very enjoyable piece of work.

They make a genuine effort to have realistic characters amongst a realistic backdrop even though the premise is a bit corny. If not corny at least Cornish.

Main characters are completely loathsome. That could have worked well - two opposing forces, both intent on violence and harm fighting it out. Instead the kids get an ill-thought-through redemption arc, becoming heroic saviours by default.

A very fun inner city sci-fi alien invasion film (suck it Predator 2). The kids seem very one dimensional at first, but soon become very well rounded and incredibly sympathetic characters. The aliens themselves were unique as was their explanation for being on Earth. All fans of alien movies should give this one a shot.

Not amazing as it drags a couple times, but for the most part it tries to keep the pace up. Having a short run time helped. The acting is good, it has a great soundtrack, it boasts some fantastic quotes, and the aliens are surprisingly well done. The British slang is fun since it's new to me.

A superior version of what a film like Get Out would later attempt. This picture starts in a particular genre (a sci-fi/action/coming of age movie like Goonies or Super 8), but elevates it as the identity of these characters comes into focus. Cornish has an expert understanding of how things like class, race, and ethnicity can impact the day to day thought process of a protagonist, and uses it here. It all goes to make a bad problem you'd see in most pictures, become more personal and profound.

Early on, we see the kids running down flights of stairs while arming themselves for whatever lies ahead, a scene of exhilarating simplicity that got the ball rolling for me following its rather flat opening. Sure, they come across as thick-witted hoodlums, but their plan of taking down those "big gorilla wolf motherfuckers" is rooted in an unadulterated dedication, which makes their eventual struggle endearing. Fun and energetic filmmaking.

To be honest I'm quite disappointed. It's cool and fun with a distinctly British flavor that sets it apart from other alien invasion films. But the story just feels too slight. Felt more like a TV show episode than an actual movie. I really enjoyed it but at the end, all I could think of was: "That was it?"

For such a low budget and simple concept it is mildly amusing mainly for the occasional witty comment and decent acting. This sort of scenario has been done better with better social commentary (here it's laid on thick) in movies like Return of the Living dead though. The characters, script, and aliens were still way too cheesy and cutesy most of the time. If it weren't for the obligatory gore and bad language you could nearly classify it as a setup for a children's film.

Can't believe people are raving about this one. Really would've benefited from some subtitles, couldn't understand what the hell they were saying a lot of the time. All the characters are annoying idiots and it's tough to give a crap what happens to any of them. The main drug dealer looked like Greg Oden, nice to see that guy has recovered from his knee injury. More Nick Frost please!

So this is the current Goonies generation. From some kids looking for pirate treasure, 25 years later it is kid vandals kicking alien scum butt. Cloverfield, eat your heart out. This is how you make a fun alien invasion movie. Great fun! Moses running through the corridor with the aliens chasing is epic.

The kids did a wonderful job. While some sections of the movie were more funny than others (the middle area was HILARIOUS, the rest of the jokes were more scattered in the other sections), the movie also works with some good action pieces, good music and interesting alien designs. The final run is epic as hell. Like someone said, there's even some social commentary in there once in a while. This movie succeeds at everything it sets out to do, and it succeeds admirably.

Nicely written and I really appreciated the way this was simultaneously light-hearted and fun, but with real stakes and darkness. I love the sense of place, the delimited, perfectly realized location (even the soccer flag hanging from the balcony is there for a reason), the colorfu ensemble cast of characters literally bursting with personality. I love the movie's breakneck pacing and the way it knows how to look good despite the low budget. I love the way it takes a gang of young hoodlums and gradually shows you little flashes of humanity until you care about them. I love this movie..

Through the first act, I was really afraid I was going to spend the entire movie hating all these characters. Fortunately, the initially unlikable characters do grow on you, once the aliens show up and they're forced to stop being idiots and work together (and those aliens are fucking scary; brilliantly designed). You can definitely see why this launched what's already a hell of a career for John Boyega.

Superficially entertaining but the underlying social commentary is at best incoherent and poorly thought through and at worst objectionable and contradictory. The attempt to craft much of the dialogue in the grime slang of South London is bold but the delivery needed to be snappier and more chaotic to make it really work.

It was... decent. The characters aren't anything to look up to, but damn, Boyega was impressive. Looking forward to seeing him in Star Wars. It's another one of those films where it has to be qualified that it's "great considering its budget", aka just passably good. The action is certainly fun, and Nick Frost is a welcome addition. Plus, I'd rather see a film with attempted character complexity (regardless of success) rather than one with none at all. However, despite its highlights, it's remarkably uneven, and the the attempted social commentary ending is poorly done. Which brings us back down to "great considering its budget".

This fast-paced and entertaining story is enhanced by a playful cartoonish humour which adds a satisfying level of depth to the run-and-scream genre antics which young British filmmakers seem to love. The no-name cast bring an authentic feel to the south London setting, and their rapport with Joe Cornish ensures that a great balance is found between a serious and a comedic tone. The same goes for the effects; meanwhile sound and visuals are first class. Possibly my favourite movie of 2011.

The dialogue, style and bombastic soundtrack make this standout from similar adventures within the invasion genre. The acting is solid. London street language is interesting from an American perspective; it's almost like a hip-hop variation of A Clockwork Orange. At just over 80 minutes, it's a quick burst of exciting action that lacks a little focus and development, but is full of interesting characters. The creature design and atmosphere is memorable: 'too black to see' is a chilling thought.

Attack the Block is a cool movie. Everything about the movie sort of oozes style. The way music is intertwined is a great example. Also, the design of the aliens is really cool and was probably my favorite part. I think the main problem with the film is that it doesn't have a clue what it wants to do. I understand genre fusion, but going from drama to comedy to horror to action and then back again so quickly ruined the impact of some scenes. Definitely worth a view.

NICK-FUCKING-FROST, MOTHER FUCKERS! This is seriously what British movie-making is supposed to be. It's not the over-polished monster movie that you'd get in Hollywood. This would have starred Wahlberg or something if it would have been made States-side. It's funny and raw at the same time, it just elicits that emotional response that only British cinema can pull off. And with kids no less. The atmosphere was perfect, it was shot perfectly, had an excellent ending sequence... A-1 all around.

Of the recent alien invasion films (Skyline, Battle: Los Angeles, Cowboys & Aliens), this one is pretty solidly the best. An effectively tense, violent and hilarious genre smoothie. Interestingly, it throws in some political and social commentary whenever the story slows down (which isn't often, thankfully), and I do wish it could have finished what it started with its themes of violent youth culture and flatfoot maleficence. But what really makes the movie excellent, and better than most everything else this year, is the incredible child acting. It went places I didn't think it could.

Modern British comedy at its finest. A more 'realistic' approach to alien films, not far off the idea behind 'District 9', but still totally different. The characters, despite being yobbish dickheads, are eventually easy to empathise with and the subtle undercurrent of social commentary is refreshingly understated. Laughs are solid and fairly consistent, with a good touch of tension in the more thrilling scenes.

There are many ways to make an effective thriller movie; making almost every single character so unlikable you don't care what happens to them and making sure the only good ones (the kids) are completely safe early on no matter what sure is one way... If you don't want it to have any tension. What's worse is that when it doesn't want to be a thriller, it tries to be a comedy, but the only sort of "humor" in this is... Pop culture references, which really don't cut it for me.
