Ishiro Honda does a good job as usual, and the matte paintings and miniatures look endearing in a cheesy way. But you can only make a movie about a giant flying submarine so interesting. The anticlimactic ending doesn't help.

Rather dull and talky, the flying sub is not so impressive in 2020, Manda barely cameos and he's why i watched this...letdown

This usually gets lumped in with the "monster movies" from Toho, even though the dragon-y monster is really quite pitiful. The "heroic" monster is really a flying submarine drill. The political plot is a bit interesting, as it flips the script on the never-stop-fighting-the-last-war Japanese. But you're not watching this for the politics; it's pretty slow and even the Mothra-esque dance sequence doesn't turn it into a so-bad-it's-good movie.

The only points I can genuinely give this is for its odd plot choices.

Far better than I expected for a kaiju-less Toho sci-fi. Interesting themes about Japanese patriotism and my favorite kind of phallic symbol.
