Asylum of Satan

Goofily entertaining mishmash. Borelli's wide-eyed indignance gets to be pretty fun, as does the hotheaded fiance guy (who looks like the drummer from Middle of the Road) and the public-hating police detective. In addition, the head nurse resembles Michael Palin in drag. The final incantation mentioned something about a "shiny trapezoid" (I hadn't realized that Satanism would require math). And Old Nick gets pretty pissed off in the end (probably because they made him wear that costume).

Girdler's first film was this barrel-scraper. Highlighted by a scene where an old lady in a wheelchair is attacked by a horde of Crackerjack prize rubber insects; you know you're in trouble when the hero looks like Meathead from "All in the Family", the devil is played by someone in horn-topped _Planet of the Apes_ makeup, and the musical score sounds like out-takes from "Mannix".

Inept and completely lacking any sort of sense, but darn t if I wouldn't watch it again. It's especially fun in a theater with a crowd, and I was fortunate enough to see the original print used for the premiere that's slightly longer than the other releases, although it was in terrible shape.

Incredibly bad. The picture for this is almost the only view you ever get of Satan, and there he is, a sadly goofy retread of the scroll demon from Curse of the Demon, right down to the smoke beside. The rest of the picture is utterly forgettable, except for the doctor character who runs around in half a dozen disguises throughout. And that makes this movie sound like a lot more fun than it is.
