How is it possible to be an even worse voice actor than a live-action actor? (I'm looking at you, Nicholas Cage.)

The animation didn't age particularly well and some of the characters remain flat, but the emotional core of the story works and the film is watchable enough.

Rating this a bit more generously since it is for kid. Some kid might like it and not fully realise it is not the best of CGI movie. Characters are kind of shallow, the voice acting not the best. A bit sadistic to the poor kiddo, though, but maybe kids won't notice.

I had low expectations before watching this movie and it turns out to be pleasantly surprising. The script is not perfect but the cast does good voice work here. Overall I would recommend this animated movie.

I've never watched the original anime but this remake was pretty good for a new generation. I kind of wish there had been more Japanese input on the film because the Hollywood treatment made for a very white-washed experience. There were only two moments that remotely made it look like Japan in this movie; a vaguely Mt. Fuji-esque mountain and a few signs in Japanese. The voice acting choices were really good. I loved Lane, Jackson, Nighy, and Levy. I could have done without Cage and Theron.

In futuristic Metro City, a brilliant scientist named Tenma builds Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore), a robotic child with superstrength, X-ray vision and the ability to fly. Astro Boy sets out to explore the world and find acceptance, learning what being human is all about in the process. Finding that his friends and family in Metro City are in danger, he uses his incredible powers to save all that he loves.

As the theater began to empty, the real fans stayed glued to the screen while muttering excitedly to one another. I surreptitiously listened in, trying to look like I was interested in the Japanese caterer listings. I was waiting for the verdict that I knew I wasn't really expert enough to give. And then, there it was. "They got it right," one spectacled youth opined with a grin. The chorus of agreements and nodding murmurs around me said that consensus had been formed. (pluggedin.com)

Oh dear. Whoever animated this had clearly seen Moulin rouge and Attack of the Clones.. Nothing original, you could spend the time more wisely.

The animation itself isn't too bad, but it's nothing special and because it isn't used to do anything that's worth watching, it's hard to care. The characters are so incredibly shallow that it would be an insult to the first dimension to call them one-dimensional. You'll see exactly where the plot is going from the moment that Toby is thought of as an outcast. There isn't a shred of originality to Astro Boy, and I just hope that it doesn't wind up being anyone's first exposure to the franchise.

The problem I have is that, while the action and animation are really awesome, it has none of the charm that the original series.

Is made a bit safer for a young Western audience than the darker source material, but a lot of the core concepts come across well and it's not nearly as bad as adaptations of this sort tend to be. Mostly harmless and inoffensive, even to fans of the original series.

really not thought through. got really dumb towards the end. voiceover acting wasn't that great, but okay, in an overall sense. also had some good jokes. also failed to mix up the humor with the dramatic undertones, kind of badly, actually.

Not as bad as I was expecting, but still pretty bad. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't go deep enough into the backstory. The first episode of the TV show had more emotion. In that version, we see that Astro Boy's father is eventually sickened by the robotic replica he made, how he will never grow up and live like a normal child. It's just kinda glanced over in the movie. Plus, that whole conflict evaporates later, when his father decides he was wrong for no reason.

Not the worst way to go with Astro Boy. I don't know if Cage thought this would help save his career (he probably did) but the story also seems a bit too short and been-there-done-that. Characters aren't there to be remembered, but they are likable while watching and again this could have been much, much wrose, but also better.

Don't know anything about the original manga or the series, I just found this movie interesting and good for kids, beautiful in the art and with some funny moments. Too plain... too easy... but well, I think is just a good movie to enjoy some time with kids, no insulting intelligence, and it's quite more than some actual family products offer to the public.

Overwhelmingly mediocre. I felt like they really cheapened Toby's death, and just moved it right along. It moved too quickly for any of the characters to develop, and the film really suffered because of it. With the quality of computer animated movies these days, Astro Boy is a massive disappointment.

A generally sub-par kids movie that isn't exactly bad, but I wouldn't say to watch it unless you were either a fan of the series or simply have to. The animation isn't really anything to note and the story is only slightly interesting. This one is easily missed and rightfully so, so don't think it's a hidden gem of any sort.

Iron man for kids. This movie is amusing enough, but nothing special at all. There was some potential in it to be a lot more than it was- ie a real exploration of what it is to be human (which is really at the core of many robot or superhero movies).

Bad Idea #1: Casting Nicolas Cage as a character that acts as if he cares. Bad Idea #2: Making the funny bits not funny (or not making the funny bits funny.) Bad Idea #3: I couldn't bear to watch long enough to find the next one.

Some good (to great) animation - sprinkled with some bits of humor - brought down to its knees (and made to sob) by very bad (exemplar) writing and a weak script. Its not to say that the kids wont enjoy it.

I'm surprised they went with such a harmless, kid-friendly route with this story despite the integral plot point of A CHILD BEING VAPORIZED TO DEATH. The animation is sleek and Bowers has a keen eye for action, but more effort should have been spent on the script, which struggles for laughs and a clear message. Instead, it's entirely trite, predictable, and a little bit communist.

Astro Boy was a mixture of Frankenstein monster, Pinoccio and A.I. He ended up into Wall-E kind of trash land, though the original is way older Manga. The best part of the animation was a short 2-D history lession in the very beginning. There was some funny robots but loads of boring ones. Kid stuff for sure.

After enjoying the old series I understandably had low expectations. This feature film transition manages to capture the general themes that make up the core of the original series, but dramatically tones down the darker elements and partially adds an underlying environmental monotone. While these changes send the film off on a different tangent it remains relatively faithful to the source material, although always feels like a spin-off. Not a bad introduction, but roughly average throughout.
