Ashes and Snow, a film by Gregory Colbert, uses both still and movie cameras to explore extraordinary interactions between humans and animals. The 60-minute feature is a poetic narrative rather than a documentary. It aims to lift the natural and artificial barriers between humans and other species, dissolving the distance that exists between them. (imdb)

Some genuinely remarkable imagery, but rather too much yearning for the transcendental ("to become the dance with no steps") in foreign lands for the tastes of this viewer (the qualifier here being that it was viewed without the context of the exhibition to which it belongs). On the other hand, you can't lose with baby elephants.

I first thought that this was like Samsara or Baraka but not really. Found it super boring and couldn't really get into it. I understand the composition but I felt like Gregory Colbert was just trying too hard. This could've been a great 15 minutes video clip with a Sigur Ros song but not a movie/documentary.

The closest to poetry a movie can be. The photography is absolutely wonderful, among the best I've ever seen. The pacing is perfect. I appreciated the content of the narration, but the delivery is too serious, it's trying too hard to be deep.

Beautiful images, lush sound but not much else. It feels so controlled that I think I'd most likely find the cutting room floor more relatable! Like a perfume advert and similarly, I don't think I'm its target audience.

The task of this style of film, I guess, is to present extraordinary moments as if they were ordinary. In this case, it's often tough to overcome the obviously arranged nature of what we see. The shifting graininess also creates a slight alienation affect. There are, however, some incredible images. For the most part, it could do without the voiceover, although Fishburne does a good job.

Superficially attractive, but obnoxious pseudo-intellectualism that barely goes beyond the message of Eat, Pray, Love. Yuck.

No ashes, no snow. THERE SOME DAMN FINE ELEPHANTS THOUGH. I can't do it. I can't do this self-serious bullshit. Get some levity up in there, and maybe turn off the instagram filters.

Stunningly beautiful film with magnificent and unique images. The narration was too obtuse and sporadic for my liking, distracting from the images and making the project feel forced.

I experienced Ashes and Snow on its web site when it first came out 5-6 years ago, and I have to say the interactive experience was a lot more engaging, impressive, and unique than what the film version can offer. The film version seems to fill the gaps where it is better if it was left for your imagination. If I am giving this a 75, that's because the web version is 95.

Moments I loved. Moments I didn't. I will watch it again. Where did that Lisa Gerrard song go?
