"My film diaries 1970-1979: my marriage, children are born, you see them growing up. Footage of daily life, fragments of happiness and beauty, trips to France, Italy, Spain, Austria. Seasons of the year as they pass through New York. Friends, home life, nature, unending search for moments of beauty and celebration of life friendships, feelings, brief moments of happiness. The film is also my love poem to New York. It's the ultimate Dogme movie, before the birth of Dogme." -Jonas Mekas

An awkward family member turns up uninvited at your house on your first day off work in a while. They proceed to show you their home movies of stuff you really could not care less about, while you try to think of excuses to get them to leave. This lasts for five hours.

I watched 5 hours of Mekas home movies, and my biggest takeaway is that I should've spent those 5 hours watching my own home movies, or looking through old photos or making new ones. That's not as damning a sentence as it sounds, it delivers on the brief glimpses of beauty and the frenetic editing and occasional narration give the exercise a unique feel that makes for a very sweet, warm and uplifting meditation on life. But while 5 hours was necessary for Mekas, 1 would have been enough for me.

At 5 hours long, this is the magnum opus diary film of the original and possibly greatest diary filmmaker. Composed entirely of sped-up soundless images filmed in life moments that Mekas deemed beautiful, meaningful, or "ecstatic" (one of his favorite words), interspliced with text inserts, and set to instrumental music and the artist's voice-over thoughts, reflections, quotes and citations. Way too much to sum up, but certainly, a successful argument for the random joys of ordinary life.

PSI of 100. This is the Seinfeld of documentaries - almost 5h about nothing. It is excellent at capturing a certain mood and nostalgia. Deeply personal but also universal. Amazingly it achieves both spectacularly well. The end is disappointing – the film is all about friends, family and NYC. But in the end we have all this stuff about Provence. A twist I wasn’t expecting and I felt Jonas just put it there just for effect.

A lot of people seem to really, really love this. I don't get it, personally. It's basically watching five hours of pretty average home movies (births, birthday parties, First Communions, vacations, meals, school plays, etc.) of strangers set to some music and occasional voiceover observations from Mekas. If that sounds like something you'd be into, by all means, but it was pretty tedious for me, especially at nearly 5 hours.

Made me feel like life is so significant and yet so insignificant simultaneously. I watch this when I'm not feeling well. I could watch it again and again. So there's no reason why I can't fall asleep while watching and continue to wake up to something beautiful.

DVDRip no MakingOff.
