An unusually well-written romantic dramedy with sharp dialogue and memorable characters. And yet, it chickens out by forcing a happy ending on its deeply dysfunctional protagonist, who is absolutely not destined for one - the final fade to black feels like a convenient place to stop before he screws up yet again.

It grovels at the feminist alter. Men are vilified with the exception of Simon, who is gay. Our true hero is a hard working single mom who's only run in with straight men are a jerk, running off because things are "too real", and Melvin. Melvin fits the bill for how every feminist sees men, damaged goods needing to be fixed. The only women treated poorly in this film is the stereotypical busty, lusting blond. Hell Helen even "cures" Simon with her nude form. Not bad just invokes eye rolling.

This film goes HARD in the first few minutes with Nicholson being both homophobic and racist. Because it's Nicholson, and he does it with that Jack smile, these scenes are softened. But, still, my god, it's a hard watch in 2021. Also, did it need to be the length of an epic? I am checking my spreadsheet here, and it's telling me no.

These didn't feel like real people in any meaningful way and it never made me actually care about the central romance. That's undoubtedly an issue for a rom-com. But it did have some laughs and I did enjoy watching the dog melt Nicholson's heart.

Jack needed to shout more. A lot more. Really loudly, while stamping his feet on the ground, especially while other people are reading their lines. Also, he could have painted his nuts red and dangled them out of his fly.

Enjoyed this WAY more than I thought I would. My Dad pretty much made me watch It, but I genuinely loved It. Nicholson and Hunt are great, especially when they're on screen together. Kinnear was also really great. Something completely original and well-acted. Would definitely recommend It!

I likely would have given this a higher ranking when it first came out. My score is based on how it's held up. Jack does Jack and on re-seeing this film I'm reminded of that. The end message is meant to be progressive, but it no longer holds up. The characterizations are steeped in stereotype I didn't notice back then. However, there are some great lines, and some good acting. So, this score is as good as it gets for me.

Brooks directs this unusual romantic comedy pitching an OCD-inflicted bigot with a luckless waitress. Jack Nicholson is terrific, relishing every last biting insult as the sour, churlish Melvin, with Hunt and Kinnear offering first-rate performances alongside as waitress and neighbour respectively. The script is great, allowing Nicholson to showcase his typically wry and chauvinistic style, but is touching and full of heart too. The ending feels far-fetched but also, somehow, very satisfying.

Jack Nicholson plays not so much himself, but a man who after years of lapsing into Nicholson-level smartassery as a means to cover up his mental disorder now really can't be differentiated from Jack Nicholson or somebody who looks like him, with serious mental issues. If it sounds confusing, just watch the film. You have a guy who's put on a front for so long to hide his OCD that being a jerk has become a compulsive part of his daily routine. It gets in the way of friendships and romance.

Jack Nicholson plays a very convincing self-centered jerk, no doubt through years of acting school and training. Helen Hunt plays a convincing piece of middle-aged eye candy, no doubt through years of staying alive. The movie isn't as good as it gets, nevertheless it is good.

This ensemble cast raises the bar considerably for what would otherwise be a cliche-ridden, hollywood take on life. I've probably watched this once a year, at least, since I was 15. Will be an interesting artifact for [near] future generations that only laugh at the sound of Cuba Gooding Jr.

Jack Nicholsons quest for the human experience is mostly interesting and even moving but the movie's seemingly inevitable transformation into a rom com killed the highly promising premise in the last third. There is just too much character development happening that the viewer has to accept unquestionably in order for the movie to work.

Rather than just being the tale of a man and a woman falling in love, this is about the power love has to change people. Not only is the main character, Melvin Udall (played with utter mastery by Jack Nicholson) changed by it, but so are the people around him. It's a great fun film, well written and very well acted. It's a simple story well told. Very enjoyable.

The characters' relationships to one another are quite complex and exist in the gray area between black and white, but they are Movie Characters Written in the vein of Old Hollywood, with very little regard given to realism. Which is fine. They are at turns likable and unlikable, culpable and innocent--yet always heightened.

As Good As It Gets is an acting masterclass from Jack Nicholson. His character Melvin is one of my all time favourites and his endless array of insults are satisfyingly quotable and memorable. Helen Hunt is brilliant also, she's such an underrated actress and this is without doubt one of my favourite performances of hers. By rom com standards, the lengthy running time occasionally becomes noticeable. But the characters, dialogue and laughs carry what is an enjoyable and heart warming film.

Jack Nicholson is hysterically funny here and flanked by Hunt and Kinnear who, albeit both doing a good job, especially Kinnear, seem a bit typecast for the supporting roles, almost single-handedly floats this movie. The script is good too, however it can't help falling into some of the pitfalls of a stereotypical 90's rom-com, but that was almost to be expected. The Academy Award for Nicholson was well-deserved and it's worth if not just for his performance.

Jack Nicholson is not an actor I have ever particularly cared for, and I feel he is grossly miscast here (in the sense that his romance with Helen Hunt feels unbelievable) but he is enjoyable to watch.
