Arsène Lupin

Lubitsch-ian. Lots of style, quite funny, and it's a joy to watch the Barrymores bounce off each other. Karen Morley makes a lot out of a stock character.

I am tolerant of the clunkiness of early sound movies, but this is not all that early a movie and yet it is quite poorly plotted and paced. It was interesting anyway. The way the stolen Mona Lisa was hidden inside an umbrella by being rolled up like a poster was unintentially hilarious.

The Barrymore Brothers first sound movie together. And what chemistry they have! It's was like a playful game with those two both being legendary actors and of course know each other so well. So fluent and natural. The general of the movie was clearly John Barrymore himself as the master thief. With Lionel as the stumbling police detective always steps behind Lupin. The movie was entertaining and clever. And add to it the sex appeal of Karen Morley, you've got a satisfying full course meal.
