Maddin said this is his movie that had the most walkouts and I think that's justified

Zero clue what was going on but there are some striking moments and an aggressively art-house style I love. Takes period recreation to the point of unlocking the dreams of past lives.

It's not bad. I've just found it uninteresting.

Fascinating and unique, but ultimately I didn't really get what was going on here, either stylistically or narratively. I wonder if Maddin used super old camera equipment for this, as even though it was made in 1990 it looks like it was made in the 1920s. It's an interesting effort, but ultimately the aggressively odd stylistics combined with the aggressive surrealism was not for me.

As if Vertigo and Ivan's Childhood were in the process of fusing together and Guy aborted it midway through. The totality of its hazy decay, disintegrating lucidity, and absurd comedy makes for utter intoxication. Maddin at the premiere of the new paradoxical 4k restoration: "It is a film about amnesia made by an amnesiac".

Not as good as his later flicks but still an interesting watch. Made to look like a 1930s black and white with flickering video and sound. Quite straightforward story (for Maddin). Best scene when one of the characters is using his own intestines to kill an enemy, lol.
