This tells the story of an aging geisha (Mitsuko Yoshikawa) who struggles to support her senior high school-aged son (?). He, however, is so embarrassed by his mother that he has begun cutting school -- and associating with a bad crowd. A young (late teen-aged?) colleague of his mother (Sumiko Mizukubo) also worries about the son, and urges him to not disappoint his mother. In order to show him how lucky he is, she takes him to visit her dysfunctional family. (imdb comment)

The story of an aging geisha and her rebellious teenage son, who falls for one of her co-workers. This early Naruse hints at things to come... the narrative is a bit simplistic, but there's a nice emotional depth to it. Though he's still relying too much on zooms (and not particularly good zooms), he crafts a few beautiful and/or striking sequences. Compelling performances all around, especially from the leads. The ending has a melancholy tone rare for its era.

Struggles to blend the few narrative threads into a cohesive tale. A few nice visual moments and beautiful ending make it worthwhile.

Enjoyable early Naruse; shows a few signs of a novice filmmaker (too many intertitles, overuse of dramatic zooms) but also has more than its share of clever and unexpected shots. The story is a bit light and it's hard to accept the tall, rugged-faced 20-something lead as a young schoolboy, but the scene where Yoshio & Terugiku are travelling through the countryside is beautiful enough to make this a must-see for Naruse fans.

This is a decent little story about the social standings of geisha's. We follow for the most part the son of a geisha lady who struggles with accepting what his mother is doing. And doesn't appreciate that she is doing it to get him through school. Then he falls for one of her co-workers, the beautiful Sumiko Mizukubo, and the road to acceptance starts. This movie is a bit simplistic and primitive, but Mikio Naruse gets some of the emotion across nicely.

Simple, heartfelt melodrama elevated by a more refined touch to nearly all its elements than I have found in the two previous surviving films of Naruse.
