While watching this, I was sure about it being adapted from a book. Surprisingly, I was wrong.

a potato movie

Feminism is used to provide an absurdist bent to the narrative, but I don't think it's very successful. Many scenes attempting to be amusing asides falter and turn the film into a slog. The other main problem is it's a wide scope film playing out a number of "important" scenes in Antonia's life, but they rarely further Antonia's characterization so by the end it all feels shallow and aimless. There are scenes and moments I found enjoyable or thoughtful, but there's a lot of tedium to get through

With the tints and flourishes of a fable and the idyllic eccentricity of a pastoral dream, it follows one stalwart woman and her gifted descendants, the endearing presence of the lead characters and their grand victory over conservatism are a distinctive pleasure throughout the cycles of birth, death and restoration that play out.

Sexist and stupid film.

Great movie about a strong woman and her family. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes dramatic - in short: a real good mixture that is definitely worth a look!
