Antoine and Colette is the second film -- a short -- in François Truffaut's series about Antoine Doinel. Catches up with Antoine Doinel as a solitary 17-year-old who works at Phillips manufacturing LPs to support himself. He meets Colette, a high-school student, at a concert and falls in love for the first time. The film traces his awkward courtship of the icy Colette, who never reciprocates.

We can see that you don't need two hours to tell a great story. That's a film where the delights and pains of love are shown in a poetic and beautiful way.

A fitting follow-up to The 400 Blows. Very romantic and nostalgic, with a charming performance from Jean-Pierre Leaud. Colette is the most interesting (if not the nicest) of all the women Antoine eventually falls in love with.

I had a friend in high school who reminds me of Doinel, at least with regards to the way he single-mindedly pursues a woman giving every sign of not being interested. His background was not exactly Doinel's, but he was someone who thought he had to become an adult way too early, so everything was about control. I think that's the key here ... this is kind of about Doinel's early abandonment.

Radio Singer: "La-la-la-la-la, Mornings I wake up singing, At night I dance into bed, Mornings I wake up singing, At night I dance into bed, I never care, About the bombs in the air, That one day'll kill us all dead, Why don't they make peace instead?"

A short story of unrequited love, it's perhaps a shame that it wasn't expanded to a feature because it arguably had the most potential of the Doinel 'sequels'. We follow the exploits of Doinel as a factory drone who develops a crush on Colette, a woman who is more attractive and intelligent than he is. In short, she is out of his league, but Truffaut's focus is on growing pains and the inevitability of life's disappointments. It's well made, but it required a bigger canvas to explore its ideas.

Just as with The 400 Blows, we're left to ponder this perplexing phase in this character's life, causing us to reflect on our own painful memories of growing pains and the humility and self-doubt that accompanies it.

Middling depiction of youthful romance is interesting, but its somewhat Hollywoodised sensibilities and playful tone is quite a jolt after the more serious 400 BLOWS. Leaud proves again to be a charismatic lead, and the tale does evoke emotion and has genuine power, but when all is said and done it is a fairly mild and inconsequential effort.

Not as funny as baisers volés, but equally entertaining. The voice-over part worked really well.

Of course it's not the perfect film that The 400 Blows is, but this is still a really great film which possesses much of the charm, beauty, and humanistic warmth toward its characters of that earlier film. Also, the then youthfully beautiful Jean-Pierre Léaud once again shows how insanely talented he is as an actor.

The legacy of Antoine Doinel continues in this second film with the same gut-hitting truth. 400 Blows defined youth with such a perfectly honest quality, and the same is done here for young romance. The frustration that Antoine encounters when he thinks he's done everything right is simply and magnificently human. The final scene of Antoine awkwardly consigned to his evening spent with Colette's parents is uniquely profound.

I don't have any sympathy for Antoine in this film. He stalks a woman who never seems especially interested in him, and whom he even admits "isn't his type". He sends her a love letter which she responds to in a way that came across to me as a friendly rejection. He doesn't take the hint and tries to take her against her will, only to be heartbroken when she resists. I don't much like Colette either, but I can at least understand where she's coming from.
