Anthony Adverse

Man, the stuff I watch at 3 in the morning on TCM. I basically tuned in because I recognized Claude Rains' voice and fortunately he was the best part of the movie. Anyway, this was OKAY, but overlong, melodramatic, and cliched. I didn't even realize Angela was Olivia de Havilland until the credits, and I'm thoroughly amused that Gale Sondergaard got the first ever Supporting Actress Oscar for smirking and sneering the entire movie.

This wasn't bad. Just long and rather uneventful. Not too much that would make a strong enough impact to make one feel one was watching something great. This was Warner Bros' most expensive film at the time and also the longest and 2 hours and a quarter. It had a great cast and the rookie Gale Sondergaard even won a Oscar for her part. There was always a certain standard, but the peaks was left out and besides the cliff scene there was little true excitement. Just a epic story.
