A remarkable human drama; a confident effort from Leigh. His unique improvisational approach might easily lead to somewhat obvious characterizations and occasionally almost does but his are stereotypes that we know from real life and with collaborators like Broadbent, Sheen and Manville, believability always remains intact, in fact thoroughly so. Staunton's performance at the beginning is incredible and, like many in the film, her character is memorable and touching. One of my favorites in 2010.

Nothing short of outstanding characterization even for Leigh standards. In a more than Oscar-deserving performance Manville leads an impeccable cast in one of those rare gems equally hilarious and moving that manages to get extraordinary plateaus and human relations out of - at the first glance - plain ordinary situations and interactions. I could watch this go on for 8 hours - it's that sharp and three-dimensional.

Although fast closing in on 70, Leigh shows no signs of slowing down, crafting a thoroughly engaging, insightful and deeply humanistic drama about age, generation, (self)delusion and the power and fleeting nature of relationships. The dialogue consistently rings true due to Leigh's well-known improvisational method, and the actors range from very good to breathtaking (Manville, Broadbent in particular). Wryly funny and heartbreakingly subdued this is all British, all Leigh, all amazing.

Pfff.... so life is - bitter - sweet, ey Mike? This is one of the most wonderful cinematic experiences I have ever had - on an emotional and intellectual level. Leigh is magician in the art of building and tearing down his characters, but normally he is bit too confined in working class milieus - therefore it's a revelation to see him using two "graduates" as platform for the story.

Admitted, Im not the biggest Leigh fan, but this one is hard not to praise! Everything from the great script to the amazing cast (especially a magnificent Broadbent) works like a charm in this engaging, realistic, down to earth drama about love, life and family. By letting the plot evolve in and around Tom and Gerry's relationship and not showing us the other stories, Leigh allows us to visualise the miserable life of Ken, Mary and Ronnie ourselves and thats what makes Another Year a great film!

Another very strong Mike Leigh film. Not much of a plot, but not much is required. Fine photography and multiple compelling portraits of ordinary humans, some of whom are doing well... others, not so much. In particular, hats off to Lesley Manville for her moving performance as a middle-aged lady slowly dying of loneliness

As expected from Leigh. High quality direction married with a quality script and relatable, realistic characters. Some slightly stilted dialogue early on soon fades away as the excellent screenplay is played out with some great performances. Manville is the films highlight though. Her performance is extraordinary and should have comfortably seen her gain an Oscar nomination and then walk away with a little golden statue.

This film is life itself. It doesn't give any easy answers. Thus, people looking for big emotional reveals and life lessons learned will be utterly disappointed. But those hoping to see a mature, nuanced drama about regular people making it through another year will thoroughly enjoy this little gem. It goes without saying that the performances are all great, especially Manville's.

A sweeping tale which benefits from Leigh's formidable direction. Most of us will recognize these people, as though you have spent an eternity alongside them, and I enjoyed being in their company. Manville's character is played with such human believability, we show compassion in her unsuccessful attempt to avert heartache; I wouldn't be surprised by anyone having shared her misfortune. Honesty in its purest form.

Magnificent film from Leigh, attempting and succeeding at one of the most difficult tasks for a filmmaker and storyteller: presenting a believable and compelling vision of goodness. Tom and Gerri, devoting themselves to the muck of the world (he a geologist, she a social worker, both avid gardeners), offer a welcoming home to friends in need. Leigh's economy of shots keeps the film engaging as each scene feels crucial. Manville and Broadbent lead the outstanding cast.

Another great Leigh film with wonderful performances and a mix of humour and reality that works exceedingly well. Broadbent and Manville are the stars here, as great reacting to dialogue as they are delivering it and expressing divergent reactions to a life well, or not so well, lived. It'd be hilarious if it weren't so sad and depressing if it weren't so funny. It strikes a great balance.

A simple story but done with such precision and care by someone who obviously knows what he was doing that it becomes a delight to watch, despite being depressing throughout. The cast is great, especially Manville who's desperation and neediness were palpable and really made you feel bad for her. When they introduce Joe's girlfriend Manville really shines. Pretty great.

Surely one of the most realistic in tone dramas I've have seen. The characters feel very believable. So it definitely got the corner stones in place for a true drama. But with its realistic way, its focus on the harshness of living life alone compared to being in a loving relationship, can be quite hard to watch. At least for me it was. As life doesn't feel good for everyone, so is Another Year not a feel good movie, with its objective observation of this fact.

It may take you a while to adjust to the film's glacial pace but if you do, when you do, "Another Year" becomes a truly fulfilling, often devastating experience. Leigh's method is unorthodox and there's no plot to speak of, but his insight and courage are admirable. The cast is in fine form, but Manville stands out in a frighteningly realistic and shattering portrayal of a broken alcoholic. The last 30' are about her painful realization -and it's harrowing.

Good film and all that - but consider this. Manville and Broadbent's characters are horrible, horrible people. They surround themselves with people who are having a really rough time of it, then go on to show off what a fabulous life they are living and have led. They have a pretence of wanting to help but at the end of the day their friends just need to stay the fuck away.

Yes, Manville is good in this, but Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen are just as good--in a less showy way (which makes the performances terrific) (spoilers) Tom, Gerri and Joe are incredibly kind, patient and caring people, but through the course of the film--subtly and almost imperceptibly--the film revealed a less positive view of these characters for me. Beneath the generous behavior of these characters, I found a vacuousness and almost indifference to the people they had been kind to.

I guess if you don't find a mate you're fucked in old age, but then again you're probably gonna have regrets anyway. Also, you will die. This stuck-in-middle-class melancholia does get old before long and Leigh's good sense of jocular familiarity between his cast doesn't lighten the heaviness. He just grinds us through the seasons.

Quintessential Leigh material, the simple conceit of the year of the lives of an old happily married couple and the unhappy single people in their lives. Leigh and co. know how to fill it up, the characters brimming with realistic, yet sometimes wild and exaggerated traits. This is comfortable and easy viewing (though sometimes has the painful awkwardness only Leigh knows how to muster) and the terrific acting and writing make these characters and their lives all the more fascinating to watch

My favorite of Leigh's post-90's work. It's oversimplifying things to say that the film promotes a "married good, single bad" sensibility but I can see how someone would get that impression. Regardless, Leigh gets the usual outstanding performances, especially Ruth Sheen. She has an astonishing presence, you just want her to be on the screen at every moment. There are beautiful moments in this film, and it moves surprisingly fast. It's hard not to get wrapped up in the lives of these characters.

Life captured through drama is an admirable feat. Sometimes people are comforting, sometimes they're awkward, sometimes they're annoying as hell. It's almost as if the audience is given permission to be a part of this family, and whatever themes or messages you take are your own, just like life itself. What I think I loved the most here was the coziness of it all. It can be so warm without sacrificing any sense of reality. That's home.

Leigh revisits Happy-Go-Lucky, thankfully this time he focuses on a less irritating character than Poppy. Manville acting is good enough to pull the caricature of miserable old lady through. "You're unhappy, unless you are happy" seems to be the main idea of the film. That is not much, but Leigh is a capable filmmaker and there are a few enjoyable moments. If I ever met someone like Katie in real life and had to spend more than 5 minutes near her I would strangle her with my bare hands.

Perfectly paced vérité drama which features some of the most complete, rounded and lifelike characters ever brought to the screen. After a few scenes with Tom, Gerri, and Mary you feel like you know them better than your own friends. How many films can claim to do the same? The result of Mike Leigh's methods is so authentic and instantly immersive that it offers the viewer the ultimate in escapism: it's less like stepping into a fictional world, than teleporting into somebody else's real life!

In the beginning I have to say I love acting of Ruth Seen. I'm always pleased to see her on screen. But this story was of course about the splendid acted character by Lesley Manville. She's got the nomination of BAFTA for reason. There was some parts the story was a bit draggy, specially the arrival of the character played by Peter Wight.

Probably the best picture of 2010. A genuinely heartbreaking and touching drama filled with believable characters, an insightful script, and stellar performances from the entire cast. Painfully real but the real extends to the lighter moments too - this isn't as brutal as, say, Naked - but the quiet inner pain of these characters is perfectly realized. It's weird. It almost emulates the real passing of time, events unfold without neat narrative or chronology or even having been witnessed.

Mixed feelings on this very quiet, observant, somewhat depressing movie. The story is presented, and most reviewers seem to react as though the central couple is a stable anchor for their lonely friends (chiefly Mary.) I felt instead that they let Mary down, failing to set any boundaries with her and enabling her, until she crossed a certain line and they suddenly lost patience with her. Mary was annoying, and her crush on the son was inappropriate, but I felt she was mistreated.

Apparently this is what they call cinema vérité. I call it boring. This movie was long already at 2 hours and 9 minutes but in "Another Year" time that was 45 days. There were really only two scenes in this film that were good and both were done skillfully by Lesley Manville. Otherwise Ruth Sheen and Jim Broadbent were quite boring. There just aren't many films out there that have been this old and crusty. I hope I don't have to see a Mike Leigh film again, and if I do I'm bringing some wine.

I liked that it was kinda slow & quiet. Otherwise, I don't have many good things to say about it. My major complaint is about the two central characters. They were perfect. That was the problem. They were sickeningly happy both as themselves and as a couple. No flaws whatsoever. It made them utterly unbelievable as real people. Pretty much everyone else around them was annoying, depressed or a fuck-up or all three. And they don't change. Perhaps that's the point. But it just did not work for me.

Beautiful film in its simplicity and depth from which everyone seems to take away something slightly different. For me this year of the main characters' lives was shown contrasting the happy, fruitful lives of some and the difficult and painful lives of others. In the end, are the happy able to help the unhappy, even when it's their work? Slightly over pleasant delivery throughout makes the final scene even more poignant.
