This movie is offensively stupid. Fuck Mike Cahill and Brit Marling for writing this. Fuck the slow motion shots, fuck the blue color palette, fuck the singing saw, fuck the stupid fucking sci-fi doppelganger elements, fuck the absurd relationship that develops midway through the movie and fuck the ending. Watch Melancholia instead.

Numerous flaws, however I look forward to the sequel, in which the bereaved husband and father engages in a series of closely-matched battles with his doppelgänger (who turns out to be an evil version of himself) in order to take rightful possession of his alternate family (who, fortunately, turn out to be even better than his original family).

Amazing film, great acting and a powerful story. Beautiful soundtrack and some thought-provoking scenes. Rather light on the sci-fi elements but that doesn't hurt the film at all. Ending is brilliant but you'll have to see for yourself. Highly recommended, especially if you go in with an open mind.

Everywhere you look, synopsis' for this movie say "discovery" of another Earth, like it had been sitting up there, a big blueberry in the sky for millions of years and nobody noticed. Some guy looks up one day and points, "Dude, what's that?" "Dear god, it's another Earth!" Maybe next time Cahill can think up a plot that couldn't have been bettered by a toddler.

Guys (and girls) this is not Sci-fi, it's just drama, and not a good one at that.
Totally didn't work for me. And it doesn't get its facts straight. The first human (Gagarin) was in space ONE ORBIT. Not one month to ... (spoiler).

Slow, dreamlike, and absolutely beautiful - "soft" sci-fi where even with alternative planets and space travel, it's still all about two people and who they might have been and might still be. It's not Solyaris, but it might just be this year's Moon.

The strengths of this are a neat idea of a duplicate Earth (fuck logic -- it's used to examine guilt and redemption and whatnot), a strong performance by Brit Marling, and pretty solid music. It also has a wonderful little ending shot to tie it all up. The drama is handled well. It was never boring.

A pretty good movie about guilt and redemption, nicely executed for the most part. As the movie progresses you start feeling more and more for the protagonist(s). However the secondary science fiction story (which isn't exactly believable) offers a possible happy ending and enough ambiguity to possibly spoil the whole point of the movie. Well, you'll just have to see it to figure it out for yourself I guess.

A quiet tale of guilt, accompanied by a unique poetic motif standing for all human uncertainty hovering in the sky above. A lot is done with very little here; the settings and performers are sparse, but they all serve a definite and meaningful purpose. The use of the duplicate Earth in the background is very frequent, but somehow never feels overused. It's such a perfect symbol that serves the capacity of this medium to its fullest. The ending is the best I've seen in many years.

There was a fantastic period when technology allowed indie filmmakers to make cool sci-fi films that were superior to their big-budget counterparts. This film was a perfect example; as we see a young woman trying to correct a wrong in a world that's being changed via its speculative premise. It's also great in how it presents just enough of the science to the audience. Still, it's a sad example of sexism that Britt Marling didn't get more work after its release. Highly recommended.

Marling shows her talent with Another Earth, a film that is more about a woman's guilt, grief and penance than it is about a duplicate planet. The SF elements are used to further a philosophical discussion and thematic exploration of determinism and hope. Cahill's direction is raw and unpolished in places, leaving certain details vague, but effective in conveying an impending collision between the characters. Enjoyable but not exciting.

They forgot the sci and the fi in this. Bar sparking some philosophical discussions (and not much of that) the other Earth could have been eliminated entirely and you'd basically have the same movie. Probably would have been better for it.

It's a flawed, predictable after-crime/accident moral tale masked by an indie low-key sci-fi premise, but Brit Marling's haunting, pale and stoic presence on screen turns this into a philosophical speculation about an idea that hardly comes to our minds when we think about what is out there: what if, instead of other races, we just find alternate versions of ourselves? Good, but also struggling film -- and there Fringe episodes which are better than this.

You'll find here a lot of subtlety in the vein of Kieslowski (you could see even more direct inspirations story-wise with Double Life of Veronique and Blue). And I'd rather call it magic realism than SF. The story isn't very elaborate. It's more-or-less only an extended metaphor. Fortunately, Brit Marling is heart-breakingly lovely enough to carry it through.

It has 'art school project' written all over it. Fucking hipsters 'being creative', but in fact it's just a poorly executed (promising) idea. Cinematography, editing, acting looks and feels amateurish and cheap. There were a few lines in the film that really caught my attention (story of Russian cosmonaut), but those bits are ever so rare. Cahill still has a long way to go.

A great premise ruined by an execution that simply did not ring true. Only a young scriptwriter with absolutely no life experience could write characters that would behave in this way. And making everything blue in post does not substitute for cinematography. Disappointing because I really wanted to like this.

Well directed and well acted. Brit Marling was a good choice for the lead. Despite not much happened in the main plot, the substantial power of the story was loaded into the never reached another Earth. It was thing they talked about and it was all the time in the reach of the hand. Very powerful inner science fiction story indeed. The end was a nice touch.

Another Earth has such a unique and interesting story, which does not happen to often these days with so many remakes and unoriginal films being made. The film deals with many human emotions, revenge, lust, gluttony, but also has just enough sci-fi to keep you guessing throughout the film. Both of the story lines blend together perfectly, and the conclusion will you leave you speechless. Another Earth is a one of a kind.

Cahill's and Marling's debut (or, to paraphrase Marling, this opportunity to create acting work for herself) makes use of cinéma vérité techniques to tell a human story with a sci-fi backdrop similar to Cloverfield or Primer. It's easy to deride this movie for what it's not, but what it is is a drama about remorse, coping with the unforgivable, and what it is to face oneself. The cinematography is gorgeous, lingering on all the right moments, and the score heightens the constant tension well.

Understated but utterly compelling drama pic, neatly written and with fantastic performances from the leads - this is the kind of thoughtful, moving film that I wish we would see more of. The real trick of Cahill and Marling's screenplay is to let the other-world backdrop give the film extra room to breathe above and beyond the taut emotion of its characters. They are forced to reflect on their situation and we are given the time and space to do that ourselves. Highly recommended.

This movie annoyed me with a ridiculous premise and heavy handed story telling. Music and plot is overly dramatic. While the moment to moment story is often engaging and worth watching, it is held together by a ridiculous unnecessary premise. They could have made a better movie based on reality since absolutely none of the nonsense was essential to the story. An example of just how easily a movie can go off track by idiotic plot contrivances and/or marketing gimmicks.

Spoiler Alert -
What really soured the movie for me was the totally unneeded romantic connection between the student and the composer. Uses its clearly limited budget very well. Marling's lead performance is excellent, & although her odd-couple relationship with Mapother's character is compelling, it is slightly underdeveloped. Visually "Another Earth" is nice too, with images of 'Earth Two' used very effectively. The sci-fi elements take a back seat to the central relationship, but both elements marry together well. Some scenes don't quite work, others however are really brilliant, including a supurb final scene.

I liked the idea here, the questions it posed, the way the characters seemed realistic with how they reacted and how they made mistakes, how broken up they were due to their individual experiences. The ending was... disappointing? I get that it was meant to stay open for interpretation, in which place are we at the end of this movie, what is going to happen next, but with posing so many questions throughout the story, it never answers them.

Intriguing if not entirely successful rumination on existential matters doesn't really use the "Earth 2" concept in a resonant, meaningful or conclusive way - without it, it's a poignant and understated portrait of grief and loss, (as much for Marling as Mapother) if ultimately plotted in a way that resembles a soap opera. Worth it for the leads whose developing relationship has a sweet poignancy; just would have worked better with either more or less of the "gimmick".

Love how the sci-fi is backgrounded to the same extent that family is backgrounded -- here are the things that the lead cannot relate to, family, earth, here is the thing which might solve that, the other guy and playing as his family, another earth. This is a profoundly slow and sad film, (despite its vague attempt to end with a moment of hope). It’s also an excellent illustration of the Sex Pistols’ lyric, “a second of your life, ruined for life”. That’s probably why I like it so much; very realistic. With that said, the filmmakers show that at least they've learned a thing or two from Kieslowski and Inarritu about sustaining a consistent (if rather heavy-handed) atmosphere and poetic tone and know how to shoot their metaphoric melodrama stylishly (though i could have done without the jarring zooms).

This is not an alien movie/science fiction per se. That is just something in the background to carry the movie. It's a story of something tragic and real, and how one deals with something that could be so unforgettable. The science fiction portion was just a "happily ever after" piece to a dilemma that could really never be fixed. This a a drama piece, and one done quite well with a low budget. If you like drama, this would be a likable movie for you.

Right when the movie may become good it ends. Very disappointing!

I really dislike the visual style and cinematographic choices for this movie, which I believe is not all due to lack of money. It's a decent drama and some scenes were suspenseful and others made me care about the young student, a fantastic performance by Brit Marling. The whole subplot with the blind man is kind of ridiculous and almost becomes laughable as the movie tries to get the viewer emotionally invested in that despite it not being earned.

This film doesn't use either of it's plot devices all that well. What made this an somewhat interesting film is the scenes between the young woman and the man who's life she shattered.Other then that this was pretty much a typical indie drama that while it didn't bring much to the table is interesting enough to watch at least once.

Fans of Solaris and beautiful women look no further! Though not quite the same as the aforementioned film, it offers a similar tone in atmosphere in which there's a fairly straightforward plot but set against a sci-fi back drop. At times a little slow but never boring. Brit Marling manages to shine throughout and takes Another Earth to new heights (pardon the pun). She is definitely one to watch (and I'm not just taking about future projects of hers, wowzers!).
