In a sharpshooting match, the manager of a Cincinnati hotel bets on the fellow who's been supplying the hotel with quail...who turns out to be young Annie Oakley. "Annie Oakley" is filled with contrived stereotypes that I'm sure we're more enjoyable to a 1935 audience. I found its manufactured plot too corny for it to entertain me.

Pauline Kael was quite an admirer of Barbara Stanwyck, and give this flick a much better review than I would be inclined to. Of course, when she wrote, "[Stanwyck]'s consistently fresh and believable, and she brings a physical charge to the role," she was absolutely right. Still, it's a role that showcases none of the sorts of things that she did better than anyone. She's just so damn... wholesome... in this.

Hollywood version of Annie Oakley's life, making most of it up for the sake of doing a enchanting romance story. Refreshing watching a Barbara Stanwyck movie that has time to develop her character. It's not the most challenging role of her life, but it's a step in the right direction to shape her image. The comic relief with Chief Thunderbird as Sitting Bull sure had it's moments. This is a solid family movie without much drama. Just glamorizing Oakley's life and making it into tasty popcorn.

Stanwyck is fine, and Stevens presents us with a vivid recreation of "The Wild West Show." But the script--particularly the last half--is untrue, corny and contrived.

A charming little movie brought to life by Stanwyck. It's not great in any way but Annie Oakley is an interesting character and Stanwyck's good portrayal makes this worth watching.
