John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia's delight with Annabelle doesn't last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle. (imdb)

Annabelle isn't as bad as it is just lacking ambition. When you have tools to work with and a blueprint left by a good director in James Wan on how to do this franchise, I feel like this could've went for more than typical jump scares and cliche tropes. Annabelle feels like it just checks the boxes it needs to, doing the bare minimum in every area to put butts in the seats. Sadly, that isn't bad, it's just forgettable, and depressing given some of that talent present here.

There's some good ideas (one of which is not a freaking origin story. Everything is an origin story now. Can't wait for Dracula: The Freaking Origin), and there's even a couple of scenes that are executed well, but this movie is not what I'm looking for from a creepy doll. Here's my rankings: 1. Talking Tina 2. Fats from Magic 3. Chucky 4. Annabelle from The Conjuring, (and not this nonsense) 5. Liv Tyler

I saw this years ago and forgot to rank it. Forgettable characters, generic story, lacking scares, and no ambition easily makes this one of the most disappointing horror films I've seen. If you like The Conjuring, skip this.

It's basically the greatest hits from past horror movies made palatable for 2010s white Christians. It's basically shit, to summarize. They even stole my favorite 70s Mario Bava gag -- little kid turning into an adult mid-stride -- and managed to fuck it up despite having access to CG. Bava did that shit out of camera. Y'all just suck at your jobs.

Wow, criticker's probable score was way off thinking I'd give this a 46. This - and the Conjuring before it - provide some of the most effective scares I've ever seen in a conventional movie about being haunted. The scene where the young girl runs at the mom and changes at the door is one I'd never seen before. The performances are all top-notch too. The way the priest is prevented from going into the church was very "meh" but I take pleasure in knowing the climax will annoy Woke types.

I really hated this. I enjoyed The Conjuring but even then felt no interest in seeing more of Annabelle, a doll who literally never moves or does anything, and only seems to exist to freak out the niche of people who find dolls creepy to begin with. Aside from that, the characters lack any depth, the acting is terrible and the scares are non existent. A complete borefest!

I liked the setting and I liked the characters of Mia and John. I like my horror movie protagonists smart enough that I feel they have a fighting chance and sympathetic enough that I feel they deserve it. But the rest was just one cliché after another and the character of Evelyn was just plain lazy writing. The way she bonded with Mia out of nowhere and started showering Leah with gifts, I was half expecting her to turn out to be a satanic stalker. Would have made a better character arc anyway.

Annabelle was nowhere near as fun or engaging as The Conjuring, and I think the lack of James Wan is the issue. Leonetti just doesn't feel the same. The cast is alright, but with no standouts whatsoever. My other main gripe is a lack of scares or good storytelling. The plot is standard and expected, while the scares are cliched. Rough, and not a good movie, but not all bad.

Threatened babies, ceiling-crawling demons, screeching occultists and bloody suicides do not a watchable movie make. In this case they simply play out as a bunch of dark and distasteful moviemaking banalities that should be enumerated in the Big Book of Horrible Horror Movie Clichés ... which I may be forced to start writing after completing this review. Apart from one short scene, not scary in the slightest, but it is strangely entertaining. It falls apart more and more towards the end and becomes laughable, but up until a certain point it has a lot of quality in the production.

Borrows heavily from James Wan's previous above-average horror films, The Conjuring (including the exact same ending) and Insidious, and also takes liberally from Rosemary's Baby of all things. So this ends up creating decent atmospheres and scares from time to time. However, those both had better writers and directors and the helm, and this suffers accordingly. The low point was the only black woman in the movie killing herself to appease Satan, and the happy resolution music starting to play.

Annabelle is just a bad horror movie. It's not scary. It relies on telegraphed jump scares -- accompanied with loud music -- and completely neglects to create any sort of atmosphere or sustained feeling of suspense. We don't care about these characters, as they're poorly acted and have no real characterization. The story is silly and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and it's hard to stop laughing at how dumb it all gets by the end.

Creepy dolls are creepy. It's been shown that they can create some pretty good horror tropes, but none of that is put to use here. The plot is bland, there are hardly any scares and when they do happen, they are the jump scare -kind. A lot of potential wasted here. But who wants a doll like that for their nursery, really? What is the matter with you?

Cheerfully silly horror film will hold no surprises for anyone who has ever seen a horror film before; Wallis and Horton are likable leads, and the film moves at a brisk pace without ever taking itself seriously. 'Chekhov's Guns' abound to an almost absurd degree; Leonetti does manage some genuinely tense moments at times, but perhaps never tops the opening 'neighbours' shot which is exceptionally well staged and executed.

The film makers created plenty of unique ways to scare the viewer. I am shocked it was rated so poorly on Rotten Tomatoes. I thought it would be over the top - filled with people and things flying through the air, but I don't think Annabelle even blinks.

There are one, maybe two memorable moments in the entire thing. Otherwise, there's no evidence that any of these spirits are threats other than some cheap scares that could be some kids in sheets. When the focus is on characters, they don't flesh them out enough for the audience to care about them. It's too uneventful to be calling itself a horror film.

This movie is terribly generic and the acting is mediocre at best but it's not horrible. The biggest problem is the fact that the director doesn't know how to build tension or deliver scares, which just makes the film dull and kind of hard to sit through. Annabelle: Creation is just as cliche ridden and generic as this film but you can tell that David F. Sandberg knows how to stage shots and make a scary movie.

(Viewed on 16/02/15): Annabelle is a pointless Conjuring spin off that unfortunately won't be the last; there are a whole series of Annabelle films planned as well as one centered on the demonic nun from Conjuring 2. Wan is completely shameless, but he at least he has some skill and the good sense to let others direct these inevitable turds. Annabelle is a poorly made horror that is derivative and dull, and the doll doesn't do dick other than lounge around.

The director deftly emulates Wan's style to similar effects: long takes, handheld closeups, background scares. He takes what are essentially generic horror moments and culls all the visceral energy out of them for high-concentrated scares, proving how vital competent direction is for the genre to work. With bold suspense sequences and a sturdy stylistic framework, the movie is a memorable, underappreciated take on a familiar archetype.

This was nowhere near as bad as all the negative reviews I've heard. I never expected it to match up to The Conjuring. It definitely takes it cues from that film and Insidious, but the director doesn't have the skill that James Wan has. Rosemary's Baby was also clearly an influence. I really didn't mind it, overall. I liked the '60s setting, and it had some pretty creepy scenes, even if they weren't terribly original. Nothing spectacular, but I thought it was fine.

Just your typical horror film and nothing more. Nothing worthy of mention in the plot, dialogues, acting, direction, scares, or anything actually. You can at least laugh at it. The ending for one, it scores high in the ridiculousness scale. Only the character of Evelyn (Alfre Woodard) is kinda likable and at times feels like a breath of fresh air, but also she's the one that screws the ending big-time so... Pity then, since "The Conjuring" did have a little bit of that something more.

Annabelle is an okay horror flick, but it tries to be too many things and ends up not being any of them. The Manson Family copycat angle is interesting but ultimately goes nowhere. And who in their right mind would want an ugly ass doll like that in their home anyway? Baffling.

My girlfriend and I love watching pg-13 horror movies and I have no real idea why. They're completely predictable and generally toothless but there's something about their wide-eyed doofiness that I can really sink myself into. In this case Annabelle is ok. Some parts were creepy and I loved the Krampus scurrying around the ceiling. Annabelle was barely in it though and the end where everyone was taking turns on that damn ledge was something out of a comedy.

Gets its inspiration from the best films of the genre (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist etc.), and some of the thrills equal those of The Conjuring. But the acting and dialogue are horrendous which is unfortunate for a film that rely so heavily on those aspects.

Definitely not as bad as the lot (majority) of you make it out to be. Sure it's not up there with the excellent The Conjuring, but that was to be expected. I do get annoyed by the ultimately reactionary religiosity of the tendency within horror from which this broadly derives. The battle for 'souls'. Oddly unambiguously 'happy' ending sees family re-united because wise-ish but disposable black woman gives her soul to Satan. Also dies. Defeating evil plan, saving pretty middle-class (and yes, white) woman by exchanging secondary character instead. Was her 'purpose'. At least it doesn't defame the victims of Salem witch-hunts like THE CONJURING.

Starts off interesting, but then turns into a lesser Exorcist clone with an unsatisfying unending. Keep in mind that this movie is not about a Chucky doll running around. The doll aspect is mostly a marketing ploy - the heart of this movie centers on the usual Christianity vs Satanic cult trope.

The suspense is betrayed by a plot that doesn't come close to cohering - heck, it doesn't even really try to. But a few solid scares - including the film's finest scene, a "watching the neighbours in the apartment complex opposite" variant - make Annabelle worth a watch.

As a cinema experience Annabelle worked. And the first scare delivered! Out of nowhere with FREAKING LOUD sounds caused quite a reaction! And laughs.... as it seemed several audience members lost their drinks. And I would say the scare scenes worked well. But movie relies entirely on that aspect and the rest is.... rather boring. The domestic story that interlines the scattered spooky moments is dreadfully dull with close to no chemistry between the actors.
