Christie's mystery is magnificent, but the dark humor and intriguing plot twits aren't enough to save this movie from the annoyingly bad acting. The ending is also not as good as the original, and the bad execution takes away from the film.

Agatha Christie adaptations are often silly whodunits, but René Clair's elegant direction truly makes this pure, cynical fun and clearly among the best of them. The way the characters introduce themselves directly into the camera in the beginning, not to mention the scene where four of the male characters are spying on one another, two of them through separate peep holes at the same time, is inspired filmmaking. The ending could have been darker, though.

I would've preferred the original ending (as opposed to this softer one that Christie wrote for the 1943 play), but for the most part this is a top notch murder mystery with some iconic moments.

The granddaddy of most whodunnit tropes, and as such a bit difficult view with fresh eyes. But even so it is delightful.

A classic mystery novel is here adapted and directed with the utmost care to provide playful black comedy, stylish puzzlement, and some splendid acting cameos.

Pretty good murder mystery, keeps you guessing throughout. The ending is too Hollywood to be satisfying (apparently changed from the darker ending of the Christie novel) but the rest of it is worthwhile. Technically, the film is uneven... there are some very clever shots, but also quite of bad over-dubbing (or sound sync problems).

It's a good telling of Christie's story, hampered by the "old film, audio balance for dialogue is bad".

As a Christie fan from my youth, I could complain about the ending, or how the actors seemed to be hamming it up throughout. But the story itself is so clever (although, by now, well-known) that this locked-room mystery is worth watching, even when it gets a little silly and repetitive. Favorite sequence: I'm spying on you, but who's spying on me?

This film has a good premise but there are to many boring parts in the script. Most of the cast does a good job but the actor playing the butler steals the movie. Overall this film is disappointing.

Really not bad for a '40s movie, the shots and set up seems more modern. They made well with the limited means, budget, and the censorship. It was however a bit silly at times, and the changing of the ending left me a bit annoyed as it seems to take away the the despair and darkness of the original story. Everybody's guilt was part of the original story. Plus you can't say and then there were none if there ain't none :/

Was one of the earliest "People go to island or remote place, die horribly" flicks. Good flick with some nicely placed humor.

This is a potentially entertaining cinematic adaptation of an interesting story, but it never amounts to much more than the mediocre due to lacklustre performances from the cast (but it is still considerably better than 'Knives Out', the popularity of which I will never understand). This is despite Walter Huston doing everything he can to inject some verve into the unfolding events (he is the only one with any real screen presence).

Watching a movie this old is always a different experience as the film industry was still in its infancy. It's a very decent mystery drama with very comfortable setting (set on an island, with a storm outside, fireplace on the inside? so comfy) and over-dramatized acting. The movie is on the fun side and not grim, dark and suspenseful. I'm not particularly fond of happy Hollywood endings, but there we have it.

Although René Clair is not very faithful to Agatha Christie's book, he adapted such a dark story with extreme pleasure. Perfect for those who want a Knives Out vibe. The mystery element makes every moment exciting.

I like this version better than the 65 Ten Little Indians. It's strange that the movies have a different ending than the book. Rogers is funny and the acting is surprisingly good for such an old movie.

The first Agatha Christi movie produced in Hollywood. And with a stellar cast, especially on the male side. Some may find the rather humorous mood odd for such a dark story, but that was the style of classic Hollywood even if the overall cinematic mood had changed a lot during the war. I do feel a more toned down approach would have worked better, but it's certainly a entertaining film, surprisingly morbid for it's day. Great to come across some Agatha Christie from the old days.

Taking a Comedy of Manners approach to this whole business. Generally amusing, and quite absorbing--toward the end I was thinking that the cat did it! :D

The ending is sacrilege to the classic novel of Agatha Christie. The 1987 Russian version 'Desyat Negrityat' and the 2015 TV mini-series are both better and more faithful to the book.

Not bad but I found it to be a little too lighthearted and playful for my taste. As other reviewers have noted, the original book ending is much better, tho it would be out of place with this comedic version of the story. I would love to see a dark and serious version of this with some game A-list actors.

The book is far better, of course. The movie is too comical and over-the-top. There were several moments played for comedy which just shouldn't have been in there. They mostly followed the novel except for the ending which was changed pretty dramatically. And not for the better. It's a good mystery story, but I recommend reading the book over watching the film.

René Clair turned Agatha Christie's quintessential whodunit into the mother of cinematic mysteries. Make it a double bill by following it up with 'Clue' and you're all set for an absolutely perfect sleuth-themed night.
