Roger Vadim is a tad underrated, but for good reasons. People have a habit of incorrectly dumping him in with the French New Wave, with whom he has little to nothing in common. He's really more of a master and creating artsy, mild erotica, and as such, has more in common with Radley Metzger. This is probably his best film..

The charitable interpretation of this movie is a critique of a man's world and how destructive it is for a woman to be constantly an object of desire. If it is, then it's a poor and weak critique, because its direction embraces exactly what it claims to criticize, by playing mostly on BB's beauty and nudity. If it's not, then it's just a bad misogynistic movie.

do they have any other young ladies like Juliette at this orphanage? I must find it and offer the poor girls a home. Purely in the interests of their moral and spiritual upbringing you understand.

i love the carefreeness and aesthetic of old french films. i really liked the main female character and could relate to her as someone lonely and directionless whose looks and carefree lifestyle had ostracized her from the rest of the town. i think her behaviour, as well as the societal views associated with such behaviour as still very much present in our world today, which is a bit sad considering that this film was made in 1956.

It may have been scandalous when it was first released, but it's tame by today's standards. The final scene - Bardot's character being led home by her husband, presumably to a life of wifely servitude - dates it pretty badly. Still, Bardot does have amazing screen presence (nice mambo...), and Vadim's widescreen cinematography is nice. St Tropez looks almost as good Bardot's nudie sunbathing.

"Her ass is like a song." On the eve of the Nouvelle Vague, Roger Vadim constructed this ode to Bardot's derriere that became a worldwide hit and made a star of Bardot. Seen today, it's a boring, misogynistic would-be sex farce, made tolerable by the agreeable location and, of course, the body of Bardot (not her acting).

Brigitte Bardot was pretty gorgeous back in the day. This movie is a lot like her: pretty but terrible.
