Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
2004
Romance, Comedy
1h 34m
Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is the top-rated anchorman in San Diego in the '70s. When feminism marches into the newsroom in the form of ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone (Applegate), Ron is willing to play along at first-as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it's more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor-persons... it's war. (imdb)

I'm hot and cold on Will Ferrell, but I love this movie. It's over-the-top absurd, but owns it. The newsroom cast represents different parts of the male ego (womanizer, crude sports freak, insecure tag-a-long, over-compensator) and though the labels are somewhat shallow, it makes immature jokes forgivable as character flaws in the weaklings of the bunch. The true humor in this film comes from the random, non-vulgar and highly-quotable lines or outbursts from Ferrell and Carrell in particular.

This is a GREAT movie...if you like to see grown men act like 12 year olds...mentally retarded 12 year olds... Most of the characters come off as non-human freakazoids who, in the real world, would have been institutionalized after five minutes and the "jokes" are just horrible as in "You've got a massive erection - O RLY? Let's dwell on that through 30 lines of dialog!" Christina Applegate was OK, but that doesn't make this predictable, unfunny and extremely annoying TURD into a decent movie.

Portraying the life of a San Diego news anchorman, Will Ferrell is hilarious. Known and adorned by San Diego citizens throughout the beginning of the movie, Ron Burgundy runs into a wall when a newswomen comes into San Diego ready to challenge his reputation. After being humiliated, Ron Burgundy lives a new life working to regain his reputation. This movie is a movie that is acceptable for all ages to watch and will keep you laughing from start to finish.

In the highly improvised Anchorman, it's easy to see that this film was a blast to make. Anchorman's hilarious and quirky characters are constantly imitated by even one-time viewers of the movie. It's unbelievably funny, and you can't help but feel like a big deal after watching it. Awesome!

Though it's admittedly dumb, this movie consistently cracks me up. All the news anchor characters are so over the top and well played, and the movie consistently runs with their absurd behavior and world view without pulling back much. Honestly, I could probably listen to Ferrell in character shout for 90 minutes and still be amused.

I immediately knew I wasn't gonna like this, and it's because of Farrell. The film presents a believable '70s setting, but Farrell doesn't fit. In fact, he's hardly even acting in this elongated SNL skit, just doing a series of bits. The love interest is probably more annoying - she's a determined feminist who can do it all for herself, but she still blindly falls in love with Farrell like the dumb blonde she purports not to be. A tiring film with mostly obvious humor and about three good lines

Pathetic. I may have laughed 2 or 3 times. I'm tired of the critiques claiming it's satire/mockery, a point of view that does not hold a single minute, when you realize the movie actually fully embraces what it's supposed to criticize.

An unashamedly purely comedic endeavor; any deficiencies in film-making are pointless to talk about because every aspect of the movie exists entirely to generate laughs. Hilarious characters and dialogue (led by Ferrell's boisterous Burgundy) and outrageous scenes of which only half contribute to the plot (see "Afternoon Delight" sing-along; violent news-team brawl) add to a continually running satire of male-centrism to produce a top-notch comedy that nails its humour scene after scene.

This is a purile, childish, embarrassing, immature "comedy" from the same stable as so many Holllywood "comedies" eminating from the likes of Sandler, Stiller, Ferrell, Murphy & Carey. Where comedic moments come not from normal people using witty dialogue or finding themselves in funny situations, but from cartoon characters acting and talking in completely exaggerated, and often gross fashion. Applegate and a few good laughs stopped me rating it "terrible", but overall this is no classic comedy

It's hard to rate this film. Hard like Will Ferrell's erection. On the one hand it's big on stupid laughs and silly jokes and if you can latch on to the humour you're bound to have plenty of kicks watching this. And on the other it's level of sophistication is stretched awfully thin, much like a certain mans trousers in the crotchal region.

The definitive love it or hate it type of comedy. The humor is so oddball that some people are going to be turned off by it, but I don't know if there is a person alive who wouldn't laugh at least once. Personally, I feel it is one of the Top 5 funniest movies I have ever seen. It's really well written and acted considering how over-the-top and farcical they were trying to make it. It's too bad McKay and Ferrell could never really match their later films to this because this is hilarious stuff.

It eventually gave way to a series of exhausting, depressing "I'm talking loud!" comedic roles from Ferrell, but taken by itself it's still really funny. This is one of those films that you either love or hate and I personally love it. The silliness is on another level and though the film does make some pointed send-ups of male-dominated culture, it's mostly just a vehicle for its all-star cast to riff off each other. The thing is, they're such talented improv actors, that the film is rife with quotable lines and hilarious moments that are made more funny by the energy of the cast. It's no Oscar winner, but it's one of Will Ferrell's best.

While Anchorman's overall story arc is not as silly as the majority of the scenes - taken separately - make it look like, it never properly developed into anything. A pity as it is, this absence contributed to a palpable lack of effort throughout the whole movie. Overly dramatic Will Ferrell is sadly not overly funny and over the top scenes are more painful than funny. In this failing fight against pessimism I must add that there were a few good laughs and one Steve Carell.

The Farrell/McKay brand of comedy is certainly distinctive, but there is an air of smug self satisfaction about it, an assumed cleverness that's often entirely unearned. There are moments where Anchorman's vaguely satiric jabs at the old chauvinist media culture hit the bullseye, but the laughs aren't consistent and the digressions are indulgent. Farrel is good, but he doesn't fully commit to the character of Burgundy, an obvious two dimensional mockery of moronic machismo. A mixed bag.
