Recently rewatched this for the (5th, 6th?) time after finishing Bret Easton Ellis's fantastic novel and it became so much better. Murder has never been so funny. One of the darkest comedies you will ever see and the social critique is great. The sheer ridiculousness of every situation, every person, and every thing that happens makes it impossible for me to not love. The scene with Jared Leto in his apartment is so great. TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD!

Very, very entertaining film. I'll be honest and say that I have not read the book and I don't "remember the 80's," as I was only 7 when they ended, but I still really enjoyed the film. It's satire of culture is very unusual and Christian Bale is absolutely capivating in it. Seeing him rapidly cycle through emotions right at the end of the movie is an absolute marvel to behold. Great movie.

A seriously flawed masterpiece. The misconceptions and confusion over whether it was all real or not (I believe not, even if this was the opposite of the intentions of the director) hinder an otherwise fantastic movie and definitely drag it down. It really is such a shame, primarily because Bale puts in the best performance of his career, in fact easily one the best performances I have ever seen. Captivating, shocking and wonderful, with an excellent '80s soundtrack and fantastic screenplay.

Moral decay as only Bret Easton Ellis could write, for the first time translates onto the big screen quite well. This is, if not the best, very close to being the best serial killer movie, although it only very loosely falls into that category.

Bale gives what has to be among the most entertaining performances in cinema, and the film itself is an inspired adaptation of the novel (which I also love). Harron condenses the repetitive text and dispenses with the worst of the gore. What's left is a virtuosic satire of the 80's and the corporate culture we still live in. There are too many great scenes to talk about in detail, but I always lose it when there's that pan to Bateman alone in his office listening to "Lady in Red".

Decent adaptation - it feels more like a highlight reel of the best scenes from the book with something of a plot thrown in near the end. Bale's superb performance and many of Ellis's classic lines still make this enjoyable.

Chris Bale's amazing acting propels brilliantly timed comedy through a movie which uses violence, excess and gore to make fascinating points about male vanity and the nature of sanity. It's not just a frightening look at a killer or a hilarious farce about a madman but also a statement about our own minds, fears and desires. Magnificent film indeed!

A modern masterpiece about the stresses of materialism, public/private life duality, and authenticity. Very well played by Bale, with a nice (surprising!) cameo from Dafoe. The movie will improve with repeat viewings. The scene with the business cards was great, not to mention all of Bale's nudity throughout the film. MEOW.

Satire always risks being embraced by the targets it mocks. That could explain why Mary Harron's feminist picture is loved by Film Bros, even though it's a damning indictment of toxic masculinity, greed, and white privilege. The voice is still so authentic that they see the villain protagonist narration as illustrating their own warped thoughts. It also works as a movie--one that transcends slasher flicks by its endlessly quotable dialogue and drama between action set pieces. Highly recommended.

Bale is an even better actor than Reagan! Ellis' book isn't the most adaptable (all that inner dialogue) but here was a character aching to be performed. Ambiguity about how much of his carnage is real or fantasized puts a spin on the exploration of self-image/public perception - which Patrick Bateman is the fiction?

The murder scenes were disturbingly entertaining and individually memorable, and watching Christian Bale overact is quite the treat. But the satire is reduced down to 'rich men in the 1980s were dickheads', which isn't a very meaningful message, and having it be a fantasy is much less effective when it can't benefit from the unreliable narrator of the book. Less than the sum of its parts.

A very tricky novel to bring to the screen, but Harron pretty much pulls it off. Bale is in captivating form as Patrick Bateman, and the supporting cast fit in wonderfully. Ellis' themes translate well to the screen, the main commentary on superficiality and viciousness is intact, as is much of the dark, dark humour, combining to show us a version of the 1980s we don't often see. Efficient and effective, stylish, funny and nasty. Highlight for me? "Let's see Paul Allen's card".

Good attempt at a strong & "unadaptable" book. Most scenes work fantastically but as a whole I feel it lacks some kind of sufficient cinematic edge or cohesion to make the story and ending hit the way it seemingly intends. An unreasonable expectation perhaps but one the film sets up for itself. Due to the nature of the story it's constantly on the verge of farce & I'm impressed at how well it balances its tone (although how it makes you feel is bound to be more subjective than most films).

Reintepreting A.P as a black comedy with thriller elements is a double edged sword. Harron cuts to the chase by finding a lively rhythm, streamlining Ellis' verbosity into something more manageable, but in the process the sharp satire becomes a cartoonish farce, magnified by the exaggerated mannerisms of Bale who looks the part but completely overdoes it. It is entertaining, but neither Bale or Harron capture Bateman's pure grotesquerie, and it isn't because they toned down the violence.

It's a heavy-handed satire full of over-the-top violence. While this type of in-your-face exploitation is not usually my cup of tea, Christian Bale's performance is absolutely ridiculous and makes it essential viewing for the genre. A damn good time. It’s memed up so much at this point and discussed by cinephiles so much that I’m surprised I was able to go in this late free of spoilers. Bale is perhaps at his very best here, but I suppose that’s debatable. He just has so much range in this and he delivers every line perfectly. I personally loved the satire. It was hilarious and just thought-provoking enough, and the pacing rivals Wes Craven’s works. It’s also just really entertaining. Deserving of its reputation.”Hey Paul!”

Granted a vp slot in the m&a department of dads company, Bateman, alongside 4 others with that very same position at that very same department, not having to do anything due to in all likelihood not being able to, realizes the entrapment, decompensates, denies/ hates the self, turns suicidal, yet remains unable to undermine the structures out of which his identity emerges. Manipulation of objects within his immediacy, so as to reaffirm the self, only provides temporary relief.

Bale did a great job on a wonderfully written character and whoever casted this movie should be considered "Casting Guru". If nothing, it will make me read one or two Bret Easton Ellis books; that's for sure. "American Psycho" is hollow as a satire, but as a pitch-black, gory comedy it can become quite fun. Harron's direction is smart and assured, the script is superficial but brims with delightfully eccentric touches and Bale's performance is equally powerful and hilarious. Although the film itself seems to acknowledge its own meaninglessness in the final scene, it remains an entertaining and occasionally thrilling ride, with a gripping scene involving a chainsaw being the darkest highlight.

American Psycho starts with a strong premise but quickly ventures into the infantile with its indulgent dialogue and unfortunate choice to illicit sympathy for Bale's character. The film portrays its characters as utterly detestable, perhaps as a way of critiquing the type of capitalism they follow, though not very effectively. This is a pretty great satire of 80s excess, but it also feels like it could easily be applied to the present and work just as well. Bale is fantastic as an unhinged yuppie. The film just wouldn't work without a great central performance, and he delivers.

The director does a poor job of telling this story. He leaves you with only a vague sense of the truth at the end. I usually like Christian Bale, but much of his acting felt phoney and was unconvincing. Reese Witherspoon was underutilized and wasted. Cara Seymour stands out, as does Guinevere Turner. The story has potential, and if told better, could make a great movie. But, this movie is lacking in almost every area. Especially in believability and clarity. Even the gore is rather cheaply done.

As this neat, 1980s music fan, Bateman looks like a hero from the late 1980s/early 1990s, one of those yuppies trapped in a net of misunderstandings and dangerous women. Here, Harron crafts some sort of a yuppie revenge: Bale embodies a double man in a restrained, nervous, about-to-explode performance, but the film often shifts from black comedy to psycho thriller, not always successful between transitions.

Builds absurdist hysteria excellently, performances and dialogue are instantly memorable.

I'm always game for Reagan-era satire, and this consistently hits the nail on the head. It's not perfect, but there are some really wonderful moments, some gleefully insane, some touchingly muted. It succeeds as a treatise on the nature of excess and privilege, questioning whether the prize of power and wealth and the opportunities it bestows are just as banal as the ones one would have without them, and the only real difference is that one doesn't have to worry as much about one's conscience.

Despite having a terrific premise - and a chillingly brilliant performance from Christian Bale - I felt the film essentially did nothing but establish a series of loose ends which it never tied up. As a character piece; and as an example of how queasy violence SHOULD be portrayed in film; this is a must-see. It's just a shame that the pay-out (or lack thereof) gave no hint of closure, which made the whole experience oddly unsatisfying when the credits rolled.

Hilarious. A whole heckuva lot more enjoyable than the (utterly dull, completely skippable) novel. It does start to feel samey after a while, since it doesn't really manage to crank up the suspense or the absurdity, but fortunately it doesn't completely outstay its welcome. Not big on Bale, but he's incredible in this.
