I was really struggling to keep my concentration for this. At one point I considered walking out. I think you could cut out about an hour from the middle and lose nothing, because nothing happened. It manages a few chuckles but there's no plot! They just tried to cram as many A-listers in as they could and gave them absolutely nothing to do! They have the set up at the beginning and then basically abandon it until the end. There's no build up. It's a poor man's Boogie Nights. Just rewatch that!

My biggest problem is that there is no unspoken symbolism in the movie. Everything is discussed in case the audience has been so mesmerized by the hair and performances. I was so entranced that when Jennifer Lawrence talks about her nail polish being beautiful but rotten underneath, I made no connection until Jennifer Lawrence later told me that the nail polish was like the characters! Now I get it. Thanks moving pictures, you never let me fall behind.

I was just absolutely not on this movie's wavelength almost from minute one. It's well-made in terms of performances and cinematography and editing, but the actual story it told and the characters involved just laid on screen like a dead fish for me. I saw this a few days after Wolf of Wall Street, a movie an hour longer, and this one somehow felt TWICE as long as Wolf. I was squirming and praying for it to end by the time the credits hit. If I'd been watching at home I would have turned it off.

So astoundingly contrived. A movie you will not remember in 6 months. You can tell that the script wasn't really panned out --- way too much crappy improvising. Russell was more in love with the sets then the story but I guess it's normal for a Boomer to jerk off about the 70's. Desperately wants to be Scorsese or even PTA but just fails miserably. Really can't understand the hype for Russell's last two films. Also, Jack Huston looks weird with an entire face.

Russell seems like a mock-Scorsese in this. That isn't really a bad thing. It doesn't feel like a Scorsese screenplay. Bale and Adams are great, and I though Lawrence was as good as she usually is. The setting and feeling on the 1970s feels right. It's really well-written and made. I don't remember liking this as much as everyone else, but I also remember thinking all of the criticism was to criticizing.I will have to go back and watch it again some day but I still think it is good.

As a comedy, it fails. Had it not come out on top of a wave of hype I might have been able to enjoy it more, as a somewhat entertaining style over substance romp. But, although Lawrence's gameness made an impression and Renner's character brought some much needed heart, the type of attention-hogging "big acting" that Christian Bale in particular goes for does very little for me. And the plot moved woefully slow. Academy, somebody's got to be the voice of reason here... so thank God for me!

This film took modern A-listers and a needlessly obfuscated plot, and forced it into a wannabe 90s Scorsese mold. Disappointing and unengaging in almost every aspect. As it lacks a decent distinct voice, it makes its way through constant overacting -- often taking place in the same room --, showy camera movements -- or: empty tracking shots --, and multiple voice-overs that emphasize how badly written this script was -- I mean, you can't say Nixon and Carter's names in a sentence just to inform you are in the 70s, ok? A fascinating act of extravaganza -- Amy Adams screaming in the bathroom, J-Law singing a revenge song -- closed by a that's-it? climax.

This is performance pornography. Is there a single name actor in this flick that doesn't nail their role? And I love this movie's soundtrack, from Duke Ellington and Chicago to Sinatra and Thelonious Monk. The dialogue is quick-witted, and the whole feel of the movie is entertaining and light, given that we're talking about ABSCAM and some pretty serious subject matter. It skews a little over-the-top and cartoony at times, but I get the feeling that was an intentional stylistic choice. See it!

It's good to see Russell break out his notes and do a con film as good as the greats. At time I felt like I was watching Scorsese or even Tarantino. The writing was funny. All four stars gave very memorable performances (including Louis C.K.). Jennifer Lawrence totally fucking nailed it. The best part is he made this a rewatchable favorite for years to come. A masterpiece in film? No. A fantastic flick that I'll never get tired of seeing? That's a bingo.

It wants to be Goodfellas so bad as Russell goes all out with a manic energy. In his early works, the screwball comedy was cool and focused. But he's crazy here as the actors improvise songs, dances, and entire scenes, and the camera struggles to keep up. You'd be better off watching a local improv group. It could've been an interesting story on the buried theme of how people see what they want to believe. Instead it just becomes another lackluster Scorescese-esque macho psycho romp. Avoid.

Feels derivative of Scorsese and makes you wish that you were actually watching a Scorsese film instead. This is another Russell film full of empty acting for acting's sake moments. When you can't remember a single line of memorable dialogue or an interesting scene you know it has no substance. Adams and Lawrence take turns yelling, tossing their hair around, acting bipolar, and vamping in sexy dresses. Everything else, including the tedious and lame plot, is background noise. Overrated junk.

Confirms David O. Russell as the current occupier of Hollywood's 'most overrated' spot. It's admittedly far from terrible, and can be recommended for a single watch, but O. Russell's style is lost on me (he just seems to be trying way too hard!). It's a good 20 minutes too long also, with non-entities for characters and flat screenplay. Credit has to go to Lawrence for the stand out performance I guess.

So this is 'High Concept' in Hollywoodslang? Great cast, a famous director, y-chromosome pleasing ... Now if only they had a script. The whole narrative felt like they made it up as they went, with a whole bunch of silly turns and an ending that feels both obvious and deflated. If he weren't trying to replicate Scorsese, Russell could have a good story here. Here's the thing, though: Russell is a bad director. The interesting aspects of the story move along well with the performances, but the way that the movie is structured, everything peters out in an artistically untenable way.

The film is the definition of harmless fun: there is little engagement to any kind of plot, but the characters are simply too interesting to disregard a viewing. Christian Bale, Renner, and even Cooper, who I usually dislike, are all on cue. Good music. Some cool directorial choices like that dry cleaning belt scene. Ultimately though, there is no dividend to the emotional investment that is American Hustle. Why did women not wear bras in the 70s? Yes, I am complaining about boobs in film.

Russell is such a piece of shit. This isn't even really a "good" movie, just well-crafted. It's basically early PTA without any of the virtuosity. The narrative is a unwieldy and the characters are kind of boring cartoons, but it all sort of works off of its own momentum. Also, because it uses 10538 Overture. Nothing meaningful but an entertaining and nicely made piece of fluff.

This movie really needs to put 'Special Thanks to Martin Scorsese' in the credits. This movie is just so fun and ridiculous, it's truly amazing. There's a few things holding it back from being a classic; namely some of the monologues at the beginning (really borrowing from Goodfellas) and Lawerence seeming just a bit out of place compared to the rest of the cast. But even still she's fine and Bale, Cooper, C.K., Adams, Renner....and whoever else was great. Seriously, Cooper has an excellent perm

Once again Russell makes a film with superb characters and performances with funny, likeable and creative overtones that ultimately falls short from greatness due to unremarkable storytelling. This may have the most quality components of any of his films yet, but it also has the least satisfying conclusion. My advice to Russell: stop trying to be so damn likeable and take some risks and surprises with your stories!

Professional and serviceable, occasionally quite funny, though ultimately empty period piece. Oscar-worthy makeup and production design wrapped around actors running around for 2 1/2 hours in a standardised conman plot that we've seen a million times before. Russell has nothing to say, but he won't shut up any time soon, and at least he does it with style. But seriously, between this and "Argo", it's time for a 70s moratorium.

Despite Silver Linings being my favorite movie of the year before, it was clearly a fluke for Russell, who returns to cheap, inconsequential storytelling he displayed in his other films. I feel bad for the talented cast (esp. Louis CK!!!) because these turn out to be over-acted showy caricatures thrown into an uninteresting and not-so-convoluted plot. I also feel bad for the great songs which are played over slow-mo or montages for the sake of... reminding us that its the 70s?

The bad - I hated Cooper, he was too unhinged and it felt out of place. The narration was awful, the tone was sporadic, the whole thing felt hastily spliced together. This has 70's flare and personality all over it, thanks to impressive performances from Bale, Cooper, Adams and the stand-out Lawrence. Bale is almost unrecognisable, and Adams is on top form, but the surprise was Lawrence's passive-aggressive super-manipulator stealing every scene she had. The problem here is the casting. People will talk about how Russell is trying to be Scorsese but really that takes a back seat to some of the horrendous miscastings. People like Cooper, and Lawrence just take me out of the film completely. At times it felt more like they were playing adult dressup, but instead of playing house they were playing Goodfellas. Maybe it would have helped if the script was more polished and less improvised. IDK, just hard to get into an otherwise well made film.

It is a '30's screwball comedy--think Gable, Lombard, Tracy and Harlow--about a late '70's political scandal that is also an homage in the '90's Scorsese gangster style. I found it delightful, and richer than it first appears--fitting for a film about artifice and authenticity that takes as its principal metaphor the absurdities of toupees, wigs, and disco-period hair. Adams is stunning, Lawrence is electric, and Wenner is perfect as the sad-eyed mayor, a sort of non-psychopathic Joe Pesci.

Too derivative to achieve any real artistic credibility, but at the same time not really "fun" or exhilarating enough as pure mindless entertainment (unlike the similarly shallow Wolf of Wall Street, which at least made a convincing case for the hedonistic lifestyle it portrayed). Just as it's stated numerous times in the movie, we're all conning in our lives. So do the actors, and so do the characters in the movie, numerous times. The act of conning, paired with the tremendous acting effort of all leads, is what made this movie a really fun ride. The lack of mostly everything else will make me forget it in a fortnight. Really enjoyable, but not particulary memorable. Oh... and I love Holywood without bras!

The star studded cast does a great job as does the director. The story falls a bit flat, but it's entertaining enough.

The real American Hustle is David O. Russell convincing the powers that be that his films should be nominated for every Oscar. Like equally over-hyped Silver Linings Playbook; I enjoyed American Hustle, I just don't get The Big Fuss. It's good entertainment, but it's no masterpiece by any standard - a weak script dressed up very well. I'm resentful towards the hype of O. Russell's films. Their shortcomings tend to come from their failure to meet standards they shouldn't have been held to.

Although some parts are definitely entertaining, it's both the lack of likeable characters and simply the lack of reasons to be invested in their story that made this movie a borefest for me.

A bunch of dysfunctional people try to destroy those keeping things together. Russell really dials down some the ticks of his that drive me nuts in his films as well as wisely dialing down the importance of the final con and instead investing in the characters. Adams and Bale are excellent, but Cooper brings such amazing skeeziness that he makes the whole thing worthwhile. And we never do hear the end of that fishing trip story!

Nothing special. Just put together a bunch of A listers in a gangster type movie and wait to collect at the box offices and the oscars.

A total snoozefest that hustled me out of 10 dollars. Giving uninteresting characters funny haircuts doesn't make them interesting, and Russell neither broke new ground nor did anything well enough to merit the praise this film has been receiving.

"American Hustle" is a glamorous showcase of great acting assemble. Even if there is a sign of being messy and a lousy fast pace that eventually led to a predictable resolution. Somewhat it begs a little confusion by quickly resolve the exciting trickery of a con artist in his best. Nonetheless, it never truly outshine David O.Russel great direction and his group of high standard actors.

Good acting, solid story, insane sideboobs! I can't really point out any obvious problems with the film, other than not being especially engaging. It is likeable without being amazing, just like every best picture Oscar winner in the last five years...

My high mark is for the top-notch acting and writing, but the slow pace and longer-than-necessary runtime keep me from rating American Hustle higher. Certainly worth the watch though.

I liked all of the performances, especially Amy Adams. Broadly speaking I liked the movie. I just couldn't help thinking during the movie... I don't know... who gives a shit? Does this movie need to exist? I kind of had the same reaction to Argo last year. I liked it, but who cares?

Russell's self-indulgent wannabe-Scorsese effort needlessly drags out a potentially interesting story, focusing on the dullest parts and turning the experience into such an exercise in patience I twice literally screamed "GET ON WITH IT!" at the screen. The cast is decent - as are the performances - but nothing more. Lots of soapy staring and shouting does not great acting make. This one's already ridiculously overrated and awards season has only just begun...

I don't really know if American Hustle is as substantial as much as David Russell's other work, but it's at least as entertaining a movie. One of the year's best ensembles has great fun playing in this extremely compelling feature-length Hustle episode, and that intimidating runtime breezes by. The period style shines, particularly in a marvellous opening scene starring Bale, and the genre elange is handled with aplomb.

The only really good thing about this movie is Lawrence. She steals every scene she is in. Beyond Lawrence the movie is bland. Not bad. Not good. I'm not saying there are long boring passages, but at the end I had made myself a sandwich, done my taxes and done the dishes. Thank you Mr. O. Russell for allowing me to multitask without losing any mayor parts of the story.

The plot and direction are really good and focus on detail (from the feet up...) and actors' performances are great. It's a bit slow, especially for a con film (as Hollywood'a got us used to more 'dynamic' but completely overreacted cons...), but it keeps you interested enough. And it does come through at the end :)

People will say it's messy and unfocused and they're right. But I don't think it harms the picture that much. The performances are great, a bit over the top for sure, but that's perfect in a farce. The characters are ridiculous and believable at the same time and that helps keep the con-man part of the film going and gives it the weight to make up for the lack of tension. It still works, and it's a character study first and comedy second anyway, and both those aspects are great.

Like Silver Linings, it comes completely unglued in the final act. A travesty of poor editing and lack of general cohesion, American Hustle starts as a fun, engaging character drama disguised as a crime film. It devolves quickly, becoming a victim of its style rather than a product of it. Russell had it right with Three Kings and Huckabees, not with Hustle.
