American Carnage

Had high hopes for this one and boy was it a let down.

It had some funny moments and a decent mystery with the eldercare facility. Then the third act happens and it becomes silly. I know they wanted it to be funny but it wasn't. The best parts were the interactions between the characters. I wish Ortega had a bigger role because she hit my radar hard this year. Big Mac was the funniest. The messaging is very on the nose, but that's fine. The movie as a whole is fine.

I wanted to watch it for Jenna Ortega and frankly, I didn't regret it. Maybe it's not a good movie, but at least it's not boring either. American Carnage is like a dystopian political horror comedy set in the Trump era, and it has some good scenes that I really like. I would say that the idea and some moments in the story were inspired by Jordan Peele, which is not a bad thing.

If you let this be the far fetched concept it is and just enjoy the ride this movie is a very good. It makes very blatant political commentary through the story. The characters are what work best. Grounding them with personality and wit amidst an outlandish plot is clever. Nothing ground breaking occurs but it never really gets boring either. It's one of those movies that is just fodder for a few hours of background noise. Could have been better but also could have been way worse.
