Like the book, this is a fascinating 1990's spin on Mosley's more famous Easy Rawlins character ... a heroic "fixer", who instead of being a 1940's private detective is an ex-con trying to navigate being black in 1990's L.A. It's anchored by a really magnetic performance by Fishburne (only a year away from "The Matrix") and helmed by Brit Michael Apted who is good at this type of gritty realism.

Remember a life lesson scene involving plucking a chicken, or something. Not that that sounds overly interesting but it's got very good ratings here as of now, so I'll give it another chance sometime.
