Ron Mann's new documentary, Altman, is an in-depth look at the life and times of filmmaker Robert Altman (M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Nashville, The Player, Gosford Park and many more). While refusing to bow down to Hollywood's conventions, or its executives, Altman's unique style of filmmaking won him friends and enemies, earned him world-wide praise, and occasionally scathing criticism, and proved that it IS possible to make truly independent films. A nice biography, with some cool archival footage, but it only feels informative if you've never seen a Altman movie. I've seen 3 and I learned a little about the man but nothing new about his technique. Wasted every guest star they had interviewed too.

Basic overview. Would be good as an introduction for somebody wanting to get into Altman's films, but it's mostly info that could be glossed from a brief bio. A touching tribute with good home video footage and photographs, but I wished they talked more to people like Lily Tomlin and Robin Williams and Paul Thomas Anderson about Altman's work and what it meant to them.

Not terribly illuminating, but a nice cribs note version of Altman's life and decades long battle with Hollywood to make the movies (and plays, and quasi-reality TV shows) he wants to make. I can't say I'm the biggest fan, as I've only seen 2-3 of his films (although "Nashville" is a Tier 10 with a bullet), but that's neither here nor there since we're talking about this doc and not his work. That said, if you know little about the man and want to get a general feeling of him, sure, watch it.

A big fan of his work and refusal to bow to industry standards, Altman and friends reminisce about his career. Not the greatest, but great for fans.
