Surprisingly gripping in its relative simplicity, it provides a subtle look into insecurity and the failure of a relationship. Almost too realistic and a bit slight but that makes it easier to relate to it - it really does capture a lot of nuance in the interaction between people.

The early scenes promise a subtle, complex and lively dissection of a relationship, but the film too quickly has its protagonists settle into a pattern of behaviour: the architect who is ambitious and insecure, and consequently standoffish and non-committal; his girlfriend who is increasingly frustrated and annoyed. The rigidity and eventual predictability of this pattern drains much of the life and interest from the film, leaving the viewer feeling it was something of a wasted opportunity.

If you can craft a scene where some guy is pushing his girlfriend into a pool more suspenseful than Hitchcock's entire filmography then you're the man.

The complex and nuanced characters and performances reminded me of John Cassavetes.

A gut-wrenching chronicle of a breakup that voyeuristically captures all of the imperceptible tremors and shifts that can alter a relationship. Maybe its allure lies in the chemistry of the actors, in Eidinger's thoughtful-yet-cold blue eyes, and Minichmayr's brazen-yet-insecure demeanor--why are they together? Why is anyone together? The emotional truths will leave you gutted because they're so familiar.

naturalistic chronicle of the breakdown of a relationship, told from a woman's perspective. it's very well done for what it is, but there does not seem to be much ambition beyond "relationship movie", and consequently it becomes predictable and even a bit inconsequential.

if i judged it on the terms that a lot of critics have presented--that this is completely even-handed and inhabits each character equally--then id argue it's biased (though not overarchingly) in favour of gitte. i prefer to ignore those terms and view this as a very personal work by a woman in pain, though. either way, the mastery with which ade details power relations and unspoken transitions in perspective through composition is nothing short of breathtaking. and minichmayr is even better.

Two excruciatingly unlikable thirty-something yuppies bicker for two hours. That's it. Definitely well-observed and insightful though it lacks the (successful) humor of recent Baumbach (to name one somewhat like-minded reference point), or the visual flair and witty dialogue of Cassavetes or Rohmer at ther best (who are pretty much the kings of this type of thing), let alone someone like Antonioni (who's L'Eclisse remains easily the peerless, definitive film of this type).

With no real story I guess this would be called a character study, though what conclusions we are supposed to draw from this highly idiosyncratic pair of lovers is anyone's guess. Their bickering and mood swings are mildly entertaining at times, thought-provoking at others, and just as often, a complete turn off. The director doesn't help by deliberately leaving us in the dark sometimes. The lasting impression however is of an extremely realistic portrayal of life.

One of the better modern love stories I've seen recently, and I say that even though I generally despised both leads. I kind of wanted them both to end up miserable.

Close to "Scenes from a marriage". Great performances by Minichmayr and Eidinger.

Portrait of a thirty-something couple with a pair of very naturalistic performances. The differences between the couples' characters, and men and women's different insecurities, are deftly handled. Engaging, but a tad too long.

It earns points for avoiding the cinematic approach to portraying a relationship and instead aiming for realism, but the realistic approach to pacing and plotting, despite my efforts to the contrary, bored me out of my wits. Couldn't wait for this one to end. All the humour that should've balanced the serious subject matter was used up in the first 10 minutes. Score is not a grade.

The way it depicts a heterosexual relationship you'll feel like as if you're watching a thriller/horror movie (well at the end it almost becomes one). Some really uncanny confrontations but not much character depth if you ask me, still overall a good movie.
