All About Nina

Navigating a hellish existence of exploitation from every angle, the protagonist stumbles into a small set of positive influences which provide some semblance of hope. There is no triumphant finale, only the barest glimmer of hope - but in this film the improvement is stark and strangely comforting. By back-loading the film's true conflict, the film avoids minimizing the protagonist's trauma and instead allows the trauma to be the villain to be faced. Meaningfully humanistic - and painful.

This character was interesting, engaging, and quite raw at times. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is beautiful, was convincing as a comedian. and gave an exceptional performance. The actor Common was charismatic and fit the role well. There was plenty of excitement and also some difficult truths. Worth watching, but frankly I wish they had not strayed so far from the comedic storyline.
