Outside of the central conceit of aliens abducting Calvin's parents, this doesn't break from the formula of "person meets oddball, gets close to them for cruel reasons but finds out that they care about oddball" in any way. But I didn't care because Tremblay came across as genuinely conflicted/caring and Buster played the oddball in such a way that I'd be friends with this weirdo too. Good chemistry between them. Movie's in and out. Charming. Very heartfelt too.
