We were past due for a good Alien movie. Hallelujah. It captured the feel and look of the first two movies well enough and did some believable new things with the lore, unlike most of the sequels. It is a tad overdone and I wouldn’t call it perfect, but it’s fun, actually intense and surprisingly anxiety-inducing at times. The last act is some of the creepiest stuff they’ve done since the original movie. It thankfully has a great cast and two really likable leads. Very good, and actually spooky.

An empty, unnecessary addition to the franchise. It adds hardly anything new, instead it just rehashes iconic parts from Alien 1-4. The dialogue is trite and the characters unlikeable. I quickly lost any emotional connection to them. The cameo was unnecessary and disgraceful. A true shame, because this franchise deserves a lot better. I didn't like Alien: Covenant too much but even that film was a lot more interesting and just generally better than this joyless creatively empty modern drivel.

Exists in this state between being enjoyably-recognisably Alien and annoyingly-recognisably Alien. Many elements lifted from the previous instalments are combined here, mostly leading to some cool set-pieces and genuinely tense moments, but also a few 'don't think about it too much' situations. I do love how space feels oppressive and dangerous, and the many goopy physical effects pleased my inner (equally goopy) self. The sped-up lifecycles of the aliens remains my biggest pet peeve.

Mostly hits the right buttons for what one would expect or want from an Alien film, at the risk of not having much of its own identity. Standard, but pretty good. Occasionally falls off the razor thin edge of acceptable fan service, and features an ethically questionable digital revival of a dead actor, but in general this is a fun and well-played horror action, and I do think Andy is a worthy extension in the lineage of ambiguous androids.

I agree with almost everything in John Nugent's review for Empire Magazine. (Except that I, unfortunately, did not really care for the epilogue.) And Spaeny, who is such a perfect choice for an Alien movie protagonist, is awesome in this enjoyable thrill ride that kept me thoroughly entertained throughout.

Pointless, redundant and altogether forgettable. If making a successful movie these days means catering to older generations with nostalgic fan service while casting faceless young actors in the lead roles because a 16-year-old can't identify with someone that looks like Harry Dean Stanton, then count me out. Rumor has it that Ian Holm is still rendering in After Effects.

Romulus definitely lives within the fibers of its greatest peaks, more so better, than for worse. Álvarez’s ability to recapture the franchise’s aesthetic and atmosphere is an impressive feat, especially finding a middle ground between Alien & Aliens that’s conceptually and tonally coherent. It also isn’t scared to take chances, and carves a path forward that all fans can realistically get behind. Its pandering might be a little much sometimes, but it’s hard to see how this could be better.

Feels like a hybrid of the first two Alien movies, leaning more towards the first. I think it succeeds in re-capturing a lot of the atmosphere and tension of the original while adding a little action from the second and a few new twists of its own. I don't think it's perfect, some scenes especially threw the tone off a bit for me, but after a lot of not-so-great sequels and spinoffs, it's nice to see something that was executed as well as this is.

Basically a mishmash of the first four Alien movies. I actually found it pretty decent though outside of the last 20 minutes, where it started outstaying its welcome a bit for me. Alien: Ridiculous suffers the same problems as any remembertainment these days: it doesn't know how to be anything on its own and its callbacks unwillingly serve as awkward reminders just how superior the originals were (maybe except for 4). It's competently shot, acted and got the 70s-future-aesthetics down to a t, which makes it even more bothersome how empty of an effort it ultimately turned out to be. or to loosely paraphrase cartoon ian holm: this is crap...but you have my sympathies.

Throws out everything you know about the aliens, in favour of high-paced horror with an all-cute twentysomethings cast ("Alien: The New Class"). By the time it got to the "final girl" scene, which should be the most exciting part of the whole movie, I had already mentally checked out and didn't care at all what happened next. Exit through the gift shop. Oh, and they stole the idea for having characters tell bad jokes in a bleak situation from "The Last of Us" video game, from 11 years earlier.

Liked: the going back to survival horror in space bits, some of the callbacks, the tension, the way it was shot, the body horror aspects. The grimy feel of the world. Disliked: everything to do with lore of previous films, the actors were good, but too cute and sexy and young (mostly missing the gender fuckery of the OG). The CGI puppetting of a dead actor. (Urgh)

While most of the film is great, fun, wonderfully executed action, the final act decides to plagiarize too much from Aliens, making it almost a carbon copy. So I finally got around to watching this and as soon as I saw that the cast was going to be a group of dumb teenagers I almost shut that damn thing off. This wasn't terrible but it lacked tension and likable characters while also failing to provide any scares or sense of excitement.

Romulus mostly feels like a throwback to the beginning of the franchise and this much more streamlined and simpler story is largely effective. Gone is the hefty lore of the prequels and instead we are back to a group of space explorers and an android trapped in the claustrophobic confines of a derelict spaceship with a killer alien lurking in the shadows. While it doesn't plumb a lot of new material, the tension and atmosphere feel very much like the first film and it's a frightening ride.

This movie tried to be Alien 1, 2 and 4, and sort of succeeded. It has a couple of expansions of the universe and the creature that are in line with the original movies (1, 2, 3) which are quite fitting. There was a huge effort to get consistent visuals with the previous movie in a thousand small details so respect to that. But it is a movie of this times and a couple of sequences feel like a platform videogame.

The only reason this is so generally well received by critics and younger viewers is because it fulfills DEI mandates & has younger protagonists, respectively. Because - many of us - have seen all this before. Prometheus had its problems but at least it was different! Some callbacks are forced. A new-ISH element? is a hybrid but I think we've seen that before too. Still: the characters don't act as stupidly as Covenant; their conflicts create suspense;& it's mostly got a good pace (but too long)

The production of the movie is great, its a good looking film apart for the CGI Ash which was a really bad choice in my opinion. The premise of the film is so far fetched and silly but i just went with it. There were too many classic lines and rehashed scenes from the original films for my taste. I did go to the cinema with pretty low expectations for this film and overall I can say i did have fun. Its not a masterpiece in any way, but its not the worst thing ive seen either.

The film is playing up the original but I don't think it quite lands on writing and characters as effectively as the originals. Still, I think people are disregarding this too much for wanting to play up the horror elements of the older movies while making some references and looking past at the cool things it does. I like the clever ways it implements Xenomorph blood into setpieces, the lighting actually looks like it tries, Rain/Andy have a real ass dynamic, etc.

The last thing that the ‘Alien’ franchise needed was a character liker Andy; is he supposed to be nuerodivergent or semi-retarded? In any case, it’s virtue signalling and it stinks. But putting this aside and the lack of credibility of a bunch of Gen Zers posing any real threat to Xenomorphs, there are some decent scary moments and body horror to enjoy here. The hybrid Xenomorph is particularly disturbing, but not on the same level as our doomed friend in ‘Alien: Resurrection’.

It’s pretty well-made, some decent creepy stuff and nice shots, but man I just don’t care about this at all, just a very typical piece of unnecessary IP extension, and the fanservice elements are so cheap and atrocious. When Gus from Industry said That Thing I just wanted to fight whatever exec made them put it in and then of course the ghoulish CGI reviving of a dead guy, it’s the grossest thing in the whole movie and that’s saying something because that thing at the end was pretty fuckin gross

As I have admitted in the past, I haven't committed enough time to the Alien franchise. I'm pretty weak on the lore. As a standalone movie I feel it does an adequate job of establishing itself and its circumstances, and while some of the primary characters are one-note, I was nonetheless sympathetic towards Andy and Rain. Tense and tonal, and feels authentically shot to its place & time in the timeline. I don't love this, but as a space horror with established baddies, it worked well for me!

Visually it looks great, the whole aesthetic was captured very well and the sound was very good. Story/writing was quite a disaster. There is 0“horror”, the aliens seem 0 threatening except for one scene. The characters were all flat and uninteresting and except for the performance of the Andy actor, none of them could convince. The female-lead looks like Rey from Star Wars only that she got a pulse rifle instead of a lightsaber.... the young adult approach was also unsuitable for the franchise

Saved by the android? Is that the direction they're going with the franchise? He's far and away the most interesting character(s) here. Frustratingly, the only one with enough logic and self preservation instinct to avoid the typical horror movie behavior of the others. "Open the door" they scream, with a Xenomorph standing behind it. This logic and teenage bullshittery drives most of the plot, with a sprinkling of dumb luck (good/bad) with the ship being there. It could have been a good haul.

I'm torn between what I liked about Alien: Romulus and what frankly annoyed me. The cinematography is great; from the stark backdrops of the space exteriors to the close-quartered spaceship interiors. There's an industrial-futuristic aesthetic that gives nods to Scott's original Alien alongside the modern sensibilities that evoke Villeneuve. Unfortunately the characters and their drama are frustratingly clichéd. Jonsson was good, but a few creepy moments can't help the staleness of a mid-quel.

Alien fanfiction with some of the worst acting in the entire franchise. It's like a mishmash of teen slashers and the new Star Wars movies. Yes the cinematography and set designs really do feel like Alien/Aliens, but that is really it. Let me guess, the next one is the same aesthetics, but no plot other than a series of cameos and knowing nods at the camera. I hope all the people who trashed Covenant are happy. This trite shit is what we got instead. This is anti-cinema, plain and simple.

A bit mixed on this, but that might be due to my expectations. I was hoping this would be like Prey was for the Predator franchise. Either way, this is an improvement over Covenant, and I do appreciate it finding a middle ground between what the first two Alien films did. The main problem I had was the first act dragging by ineffectively building its characters, which I ended up mostly not caring about aside from Andy. Mostly average, but I admit the zero gravity blood scene was phenomenal.

Entertaining and occasionally emotional. Rain's rapport with Andy was the highlight in character depth. Claustrophobic atmosphere is captured really well. There was no time I was bored, even in the admittedly slow first half hour or so. The facehuggers were given some time to shine which is neat. The xenomorphs being reduced to cannon fodder after a proper build seriously hurt the film for me, probably disproportionately so. Deserve more and everything afterwards was tainted by the decision.

Alien movies are usually weak in the character department. No offense to Ripley but this one has a more complete and interesting cast of characters. The sets and creature designs can't rival HR Giger's work, but they do have this terrifying Doom 3 style space station claustrophobia which Alien 3 failed to achieve. I believe most people will say Aliens was a better movie, and I'll agree with them. One person shouldn't be able to take on so many xenomorphs. Decent movie though.

Much better than Prometheus and Covenant but left me feeling a bit flat. The movie frequently yells, "Hey you, Alien fanboy, remember this in that old movie? Here it is again, wee!" and I nod and smile. But it's a hollow smile because I'd love fresher takes. Yes I liked the pulse rifle scene, and the practical FX. The run down sets look grungy and authentic for that period in the franchise, so that the first hour feels pleasantly eerie, with a well-imagined mission and character dynamics. Then the setpieces click into motion and we get a space adventure for teenagers. Meh? It felt like a few years ago when Star Wars started producing content that happened around the edges and in the gaps of the Star Wars universe between other films - very in keeping with the world and the aesthetics, but not necessarily adding anything at all. New human characters with the same aliens/egg/facehugger/Wayland/android tropes. Didn't find the horror parts very effective, felt like maybe something was up with the editing, or maybe the aliens are just too predictable now.
