Alien Nation

It's OK, but it feels like an interesting premise was merged with a standard cop film.

Entertaining but heavy-handed in its antiprejudice message, this is basically just another buddy-cop movie with sci-fi trimmings. Jimmy and, especially, Mandy are good but there's a particularly absurd ending involving mutating alien bad guy Stamp.

If you can accept this as a mindless buddy-cop movie, then it’s a fun, disposable actioner, with the easygoing chemistry of the starring duo propelling the film through its predictable plot (owing more than a little to 48 HOURS). It is a shame that the allegorical aspects of the premise are cast aside, especially having ethnic minorities pointedly used to amplify xenophobic reactions. The Newcomers' Kryptonite seems a little arbitrary and should have been a deal breaker for settlement on Earth!

Great allegorical sci-fi premise involving racism is wasted in a film that, after some clever early scenes, sinks into formula cop/buddy cliches.

An inconsistent and occasionally transparent script looks at race conflicts and includes some humorous parallels with contemporary American life.

The sub-plot here is that everyone no matter where their from has good and evil intent. A very good movie and the kick off to a not to bad Tv series.

I haven't watched it in years, so this may be an exaggerated score, but I do remember enjoying it at the time.

While the origins of the "newcomers" isn't really explained thoroughly, they (the screenwriters) still do more than an ample job. It's got action, comedy at times, and a pretty good story. It's pretty much a buddy-cop movie with an alien twist. I've always loved the concept.

Buddy cop movie in which one of the cops is an alien. The "Newcomers" are Star Trek aliens (i.e., their appearance, movements, customs, etc. are far too human for something that evolved in another solar system), but it works better than you'd think
