Agnes of God

The case, one might well feel, cries out for the attentions of G.K. Chesterton's clerical detective, Father Brown, brought to Canada perhaps on one of his endless unpredictable errands. How much better illumination we would have had, not just into matters criminological, but psychological and spiritual as well, if only someone had suddenly noticed an unobtrusive little figure in owlish spectacles sitting in a shadowy corner of the vestry: "Oh, pardon me, Father, I didn't see you there...."

"Agnes of God" is thought-provoking, and Anne Bancroft delivers an outstanding performance.

The hidden gem of 1985?

Stagy and simplistic, with Jane Fonda substituting chain-smoking for a coherent performance, but Anne Bancroft is very good and Meg Tilly is odd, memorable and occasionally entrancing.

Heavy hysterical weather with no clear solution, but a field day for three actresses.

This adaptation of the prize-winning play works intermittently; tantalizing its audience with symbolic clues one minute -- yet ringing with a sense of Hollywood superficiality the next. Makes a fine vehicle for actresses.

Saw this on TV, so may not have gotten the whole thing. But Jane Fonda sucked in this like she does in everything.
