It's nice to see Shailene Woodley branch out, and I see a lot of potential in this story. It doesn't take enough time to develop its story, however. It's transitions between survival drama and romance are jarring. I don't care for their relationship by the end of it. It has moments, but overall, too unfocused to reach its potential.

Very mild entertainment that just really didn't seem to work for me. I'd have liked it more without the constant cutting back and forth between present and past, but even if the story were told linearly, I just didn't feel all that much drama or suspense from a situation that naturally provided both. Basically just mediocre.

This should have been so much better. It's super pretty and the cinematography is great! But the character development feels really lacking, it was sometimes confusing whether a scene was a flashback or the present, and the payoff just didn't feel good. I can see where they wanted to go with this, but it just didn't land any of the things it was trying to do story-wise.

Intense lost-at-sea movie, which is basically a love story.

Tami Oldham and her fiancé Richard Sharp set sail from Tahiti to San Diego, only to run smack into a category four hurricane which all but destroyed their yacht. Kormákur's account begins in the struggle for survival that ensued, before flipping back with flashbacks of the burgeoning romance between Tami (Shailene Woodley) and Richard (Sam Claflin). For a while, it's as flat as the water – these actors are warm and watchable, but it's hardly one of cinema's great love stories.

Though the characters themselves aren't particularly remarkable, and even the story itself is only mildly interesting, it's told and filmed very well. The love story is underdeveloped, ineffectual, and falls flat, but it doesn't really matter. Kormákur has a unique vision and turns what should be a dull story into one that's captivating and visually satisfying. He is the star of this film. There is some absolutely stunning direction and cinematography here that is well worth seeing.

Mostly boring, despite the harrowing tale of survival. Generally faithful to the real events, although some dramatic liberties do it no favors. The flashbacks are ineffective and the movie may have worked better in linear order. Shailene Woodley is fine but I had no emotional attachment.

Shailene Woodley gives a great performance in this film. The script is simple but it works. Woodley makes the material better. Overall I would recommend this film.

Despite what most people say, I liked how they told the story as a love story. Woodley was great and I was entertained... on an airplane ;-) *Recommendable

One of those movies where the cinematography is amazing but the rest is kind of eh. I would watch it again but only because the scenery and cinematography was that amazing.

A sweet love story told in frequent flashbacks intermixed with tragedy and a struggle to survive at sea. Extra points for Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin's charismatic performances. Exceptional camera work and production quality. Some very dicey editing. Great music and sound. Some of it was great fun and exciting. The survival portions were raw and dramatic, but the twist ending was handled rather poorly and seemed to undermine much of it.

Well it did spark that long forgotten urge to sail a boat one day, but his movie is bad. Unnatural character development, poor camera work (well, can't say poor really, I just didn't like it) and didn't like the atmosphere either. A bad love story and a bad survival story.

The narrative based in past-present parallel plots, bad developed side characters and a quite predictable ending weakens this otherwise remarkable, well-shot survival drama.

While Woodley's and Claflin's performances are effective, there's nothing particularly remarkable about the movie otherwise.

In the theater, I lost sense of time, but not in a great way. Not a fun, but a dramatic experience, it was a solidly average film

"Adrift" suffers for telling what should be a naturally harrowing tale of survival out of order. Beginning with a genuinely impressive long take, the film swiftly finds itself jumping backwards and forwards in time to add context to the tragedy, with both narratives in a bid to share the screen. What's more, both halves of this muddled whole are bogged down in endless waves of exposition, from under which its admittedly talented leads can never seem to resurface. Remarkably well shot, though.

I thought the chemistry between Shailene and Sam felt real and it made watching their time adrift all the harder. While the premise of the movie is different than Life of Pi, Adrift does remind me of it. Because of this, I think last bit of the climax fell short for me.

The emotional core of this film - the relationship between the two - fell flat for me. The narrative structure and payoff was a bit unsatisfying as well, the script is just a bland mess. Moderately watchable none the less.

Loved the atmosphere of the movie - I think the cinematography, the setting, and Shailene Woodley especially bring this travel/exploration/lost/love/adrift story to live. The actual narrative about being lost at sea is kind of ho-hum, I don't think it added much for me.
