This is my all-time favourite movie. The film pulls you into a world that is claustrophobically doomed, and perfectly characterizes a kind of feverish sense of failure that permeates the town and the older generation of characters, which is slowly tainting the views of the younger characters in the film, as the town they live in spirals into violence and discord. When you watch a movie like this, it's almost like staring into someone's deepest secrets, and so I almost feel shy to recommend it.

Very hopeless movie of God forsaken village in South Korea under occupation. People are on a level of dogs. There is lost in connection between each other, no hope for the future, and offsprings are mongrels or otherwise ugly and disabled.

Any film which carries the badge "No animals were harmed..." before the opening titles sets you up for an ugly and gruesome experience - some striking imagery and interesting ideas are buried under a peculiar (and unsavoury) focus on sadistic violence and torture - I get the point: this is a cold and disaffected community, but I understood that looong before the fifth dog got executed! Lays its metaphors on with a trowel, and poor performances from the English speakers don't help things.

A violent and miserable film, but one, dealing with the relationships between native Koreans and occupying American soldiers, whose sadism is balanced with emotional rawness, a gift of Ki-duk's which would continue in his later films as well as his ability to create scenes unexpected in film from ordinary life. Where it not for the appalling acting of the American characters, especially because one is integral to the main story, this would be up there as one of Ki-duk's best.

A very strong, touching and beautiful view of tough life in Southern Korea. Obviously very personal for Ki-Duk.
