Call of Duty: the movie...only with higher polygon count. No humans whatsoever, only overdramatized husks.

Written terribly, embarrassingly acted, and morally repugnant. It is Islamophobic, Jingoistic, and even a bit sexist. It is cold and emotionless, and what attempted emotion there is, is plastic. The characters are interchangeable and speak in stunted military jargon without any sense of individuality or personality. It revels in combat violence. It is pure military propaganda in every sense of the word. But damn, that action choreography is amazing.

It's really hard to get past the general "yay America and yay the SEALs" feeling, but I mean I knew this going in. I didn't really go in for a super engaging story... I went in for cool action scenes and I enjoyed them all. The movie definitely has its share of lame movie moments that kind of break the realism but for the most part it's gritty and interesting, and the wonky acting can't stop how fun it is. Plus even the FPS moments worked.

The characters were all flawless and exactly alike personality wise (making them boring). The action scenes got repetitive quickly and I felt like I was watching my roommates play Call of Duty (making them boring). The actual SEALs action was hit and miss, but they did a good job in the battle scenes. Ultimately a failure because the film decided to take zero risks with the story or characters and focused more on telling us how great Navy SEALs are.

Odd movie seems to have an identity crisis. There are some rather jarring style changes throughout. Some amazing battle sequences don't make up for the video game meets underdeveloped wooden actors sort of thing it has going on.

Hearing a lot of "what did you expect?" from reviews. I expect that when you sink millions of dollars into a film venture, there's a decent return. Granted this flick only cost 12 million to make, which is a modest budget. No better than B-level, very pro-military quasi-fiction, but at the same time no worse I guess. At times the editing looks very 80's, cookie-cutter story, archetypal characters, not-bad action. The FPS action didn't work for me; then again, I'm not CoD brony. It's just there.

Okay. There were some things that were nicely done, especially considering they were using the 5d mkII to film this. The jump sequences, the gunner boats, and the acoustics of the M4 firing - all really well done. Otherwise, zero arc and pretty bad writing. You can't use such cheesy dialogue with guys that don't actually act as a living. Meh. It was just alright. I couldn't really get into it, and I am in the military. Our whole squadron got off work to view this one, but it fell short for me.

Seems like something from Call of Duty or a Tom Clancy game. Probably would have been straight to DVD without the budget and SEALs as actors. No character arcs, no real character exploration. The voice-over made me more fond of the voice-overs in The Thin Red Line. Enjoyed the bearded guy though, like everyone else it seems.

This film isn't about plot or characters or anything remotely related to storytelling. This film is about showcasing Navy SEALs as elite patriotic warriors, not as actors. Audiences will be captivated, as I was, by the reality and passion invested in the combat missions that usually emulate a real-life visceral version of Call of Duty gameplay. Forget actors. Forget scripts. Grab your flag and run behind enemy lines with a courageous squad of fighters.

Loads of mesmerizing action sequences, just some weak performances. But hey, they're Navy SEALs, not actors. Interrogation scene on the yacht was the best part.

Overall, an outstanding film, using active duty SEALEs, live fire and "based on actual incidents". After setting things up with the Bandito Platoon as regular guys on the home front, the action starts and never lets up. It's an eyeopener inside look a SEALE operations, and I kept wondering close to an actual incidents was some of this.
There were professional actors used, but the (uncredited) SEALE actors were a whole lot better than the read...the....lines...into....the...camera jock type.

Obviously the acting absolutely sucks, and there isn't a story that you're actively following, really, but it was cool that the cast were actual Navy SEALs, which gave a sense of legitimacy to the action sequences.

Desperate and depressingly comical attempt to reinforce the American warrior myth you thought was long since proved ideologically bankrupt. The action scenes start well but get progressively duller and more incoherent. No amount of postmodern irony or peculiar taste will make the acting or writing anything less than torture.

Is it American propaganda? Sure. Are the dialogues bland? Definitely. Is there an arch in the characters? Certainly not. Are the good guys and bad guys too heavy handed? You can count on it. But this is a great action movie that just wants to show you a little bit of the army's special operations and it delivers very nicely, the dramatic part is there because at the end it is a movie, but is not the main part of the movie. I didn't focus on the flaws and I really enjoyed it.

A lot of action in this movie, that's for sure. However, I just think the story was off. It stayed on the surface and never achieved any depth. It tried with a few odd scenes of the family and the lives back home, but failed. If you love action, and don't really care about the rest: see it. If not, don't. 29/100

We've long been entertained by war. We experience it vicariously through our video games, fall into its ethos while sitting in front of two-story-tall screens. Act of Valor shows its audience the thrill and horror of our modern-day war against terror. It tells us, and rightfully so, that those who fight on our hazy, 21st-century front lines should be honored as heroes. (pluggedin.com)

I think this movie edged its way too far into real life and didn't have a whole lot of storytelling to add. Sure there were real Soldiers doing real stunts and tactics. Yes, up-to-date technology was being used for the film... I just really didn't connect with anyone on the screen at all. Even when some of the soldiers fell in combat I really felt no emotion at all because they did a terrible job setting up their stories to begin with. This was just a real snooze with some bad acting mixed in.

The acting is substandard and the plot is some serious hoo-rah wankery loaded with really ham-handed heartstrings moments. The action scenes were AMAZING though. The decision to use real soldiers as actors really pays off when they start swinging their irons around.

Oh Dear Lord. Look, I dig good military action movies as much as the next guy (especially being ex-military myself), and the action in this movie is pretty good if I must say so. But WHY OH WHY did they cast real Navy SEALS?!?!? The acting in this movie is excruciatingly painful - like I sat there and cringed when they tried to emote. And the storyline is muddled and confusing and silly, at best, but ooh, neat explosions and, ooh, they're skydiving. See it for the action but shut off your brain.

Every problem with this movie starts with its script/screenplay. It is, to be very blunt, quite awful. No amount of acting talent could have made it work, though it would have been better than that we got. The only thing decent in the film is its action, but that boils down to nothing more than Call of Duty cutscenes. In fact, the whole movie is rather sensationalistic in how it treats warfare. It gets too caught up in its patriotism (verging on jingoistic), that it forgets that it's a movie.

The worst kind of military film, one that basically tries to be a FPS videogame -- you know, the point of view of the player is there --, a documentary on the lives of these SEALs and also a propaganda film that focus on these honorable men that died after 9/11. Again, the worst kind.

While casting real SEALs made the combat scenes great, the dialogue in others definitely suffered. The action wasn't obnoxious and the feeling of professionalism and dedication they gave was inspiring. Not a Black Hawk Down or a Saving Private Ryan, but a solid military film.

This film reminded me a lot of STOP LOSS. I didn't like either film. Both films suffered from poor/naturalistic lighting styles (cheap/lazy) This made the entire film a gray on gray on gray image. Which can only do so much for it's audience. The only moment of the film where I perked up and watched was the scene with Drea Castro (amazing actress and powerful performance).

The interesting approach - with a different feel to it than most Hollywood war movies have - earns Act of Valor quite a few points. Unfortunately, the sauce of cheesy nationalistic and romantic bullshit deserves a big point deduction. All in all 'almost OK, but just not quite'.

There is one awesome action scene in this film and it is the rescue mission at the beginning. The intensity is there for that scene and the sound and visuals were spot on. However the rest is jingoistic, gag-inducing, pro-military, bald-faced propaganda horse shit half shot like first person shooter video game. I should also mention that the acting is among the worst I've ever seen in my life, even among straight-to-DVD military-themed actioners.

Very well-executed actions scenes (barring some weird skipping in and out of first-person view). Off-screen narration is monotonous. Not much can be said about acting, or the lack thereof (hey, what do you expect from non-actors?). Over-idealization of the Navy and uninteresting/unintelligent villains - the latter were like fodders to boost the protagonist's image of superiority. It's more of a tribute/recruitment video/dedication to servicemen, then a movie per se.

Act of Valor? More like of Act of War. What gives these guys the right to just jump into other countries and start shooting people (even if they are bad people)? The action battle scenes are indeed amazing, but that's all. The rest (including the motivation) is one big joke. This is an examplary example of the last convulsions of a once powerful nation.
