The brooding, noir-ish Aag is an ideal entrance point for audiences unfamiliar with Hindi cinema: it often feels like a 1930s Hollywood melodrama with an expressionistic twist. Bollywood love triangle set in the theater, starring and directed by a young Raj Kapoor, along with Prem Nath and the "First Lady of Indian Cinema" Nargis. Certainly got a mood going. Sure, you got to adjust your mindset for Indian cinema, for it's got the usual elements expected from Bollywood, but a lot of this is also classic cinema in a general sense. The way beauty is captured, the passion, the visual storytelling. As I said, it has a mood going, which is universally strong.
