Michael Curtiz's earliest films built directly upon his time acting and directing in the Hungarian National Theater, and feature the same actors he worked with there. Unsurprisingly then, the acting is quite good, and the staging does a nice job of bringing performances to the foreground to show them to best advantage. As in this staging of a play from 1880; it is quite contrived and melodramatic, as plays of the era often were, but it's well produced, with even a few excursions outside.

One got to start somewhere and legendary director Michael Curtiz started back home in his native country Hungary making standard romance films of the European flavor. This is one of very few of his films from before he took Hollywood by storm that still exist. And it's.... quite unremarkable. But for it being war time, mid-1910s and early in his career, that's hardly surprising. A tolonc has it's mildly enjoying bits, but everything about this film yells standard production.
