There's a "Seinfeld" episode where the guys are all aching to see a movie called Rochelle Rochelle, "a young girl's strange erotic journey from Milan to Minsk". They think all the nubile nudity will be exciting, but they end up bored to tears. This is pretty much that movie. For most of it, it's a teenage peep show constantly being interrupted by discussions about nothing in particular that have no bearing on anything. Or worse, someone making some meaningless observation about love.

I don't like that kind of Rohmeresque movies. I expect from a director style and passion when he deals with complex human relations. And here it's not "complex" either, there is a girl who seeks satisfaction in sex because of a lack of meaning in her life. That kind of movies seem spoiled and luxurious to me. At the end I can't help asking myself "so what?"

a girl is a 'slut' and her family doesn't like that. the girl is in the right. pretty much a sexual coming of age tale. at times i thought it was a really good drama and at others i felt it was going through the motions a bit. criterion compares this director to cassavetes, and while there were a couple of scenes that could be seen in that light, the two aren't really too similar.

Top badass moment? It’s always fun to enjoy a dysfunctional family, especially a French one. This movie comes with a 48-page booklet, to help explain to stupid English people like me how to understand the transcendental meaning of having a full stop at the end of its title. I’ve only skimmed over it, but apparently they didn’t rehearse or eat anything, or have a script, crew, equipment or actors, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

As I learned watching extras that came on Criterion DVD, Pialat tossed the script away and portion of this film was made on the go, the way he felt story should go. As a result, plot is disjointed and often seems pointless. Just lots of shouting and slapping. On the other hand, best scenes/dialogs were improvised too. What makes this film worthwhile, is acting debut by Bonnaire - she is real good.

Pretty disturbing, since the girl wants to fuck her father and the boy wants to fuck her mother and all...

Raw and unflinching with a magnetic performance by Sandrine Bonnaire, but it drags at points and is a bit uneven. It's essentially a dysfunctional/coming of age story. The family really, really likes slapping each other. Generally kept my attention, but a bit boring at times.

An interesting premise ruined by a disjointed script. Though, it is doubtful whether there is any script at all. I loved Suzanne, she is indeed one of the most complex characters of all time, and therefore she deserves to be in a better story. The story is full of wonderful small moments but as a whole, it goes nowhere, it tells nothing.

Viewed August 4, 2021. Sandrine Bonnaire's performance is the greatest in Pialat's films up to this point, and that's crucial because every incident in the film is built around her. Growing up, growing older, weathering the passage of time, reevaluating the importance of home and family.

Box Versátil A Arte Pialat.

I've only seen more dysfunctional families in farces. Never in such a realistic movie. And Suzanne, at the bottom of her familial food-chain, the victim of constant physical and psychological abuse, has developed an Electra complex which she vents through her sexually predatory behavior. It's an utterly ingenious, harrowing work of psychological observation, and may be Pialat's very best.

I liked it a lot but didn't love it. It feels like a film Cassavetes would have made if he cared about the problems of a coming of age teenage girl instead of middle aged men. It's raw and intense and in many ways very effective, but I lacked a connection and the film distances the audience by cutting the intensity into disjointed bursts and never fully developing anyone outside of the lead.

Interestingly even-handed - the film never seems to side with any of the characters which keep a nice balance. Believability is a bit stretched at times which hurts the psychological analysis aspects, but we still get an interesting look at a father-daughter relationship. Some of the other observations fall very flat though. The filming of eye movement was great, but not enough to really deliver this one home.

had not detailed depiction of mother. but that is covered up by the tension between fille-pere. dad was the man, with his wisdom. was great to see him in limbo in the last scene to get real him. needs patience to stand and go through it. has to be seen due to its portrayal of an interesting relationship between fille-pere and sister-brother.

It's not a bad movie, it held my attention with a quick pace and well written dialogue, unfortunately though, it is entirely vacuous.
