I found Godard's experimental approach to editing, and in particular the soundtrack, to be overzealous and extremely trying of my patience. Why create an experience so jarring and discomfiting for the viewer, if there is no reward on offer? I've nothing against paper-thin, circular stories where nothing happens except for a bit of Gallic ooh-la-la and vivre sa vie. But all the artistic choices in this film seem to work against each other in preventing a environment that welcomes the film viewer.

I'm finally convinced. The world moves to the wink of Anna Karina. A look from her and the ground shakes, a wink and it damn near shatters into teeny, tiny pieces of something undeniably heavenly.

A Woman Is a Woman is a love-or-lack-thereof story presented in the form of a parody of musical comedies. I had some reservations at first, but once I'd gotten used to the movie's hyperactive soundtrack, its constant references to itself and other movies, the relentless irony and people talking directly to the camera all the time, I was lovin' it. It may be a bit too clever and ironic for its own good at times, but it's intelligent and entertaining enough to rise above its own flaws.

Karina winks and everything is right with the world. It may be Godard's most accessible film and you can tell he had fun making a black comedy tribute to musical romance. Belmondo is great as well.

I like the way Godard takes conventional filmmaking, looks at it, shakes his head, throws it away, picks up the pieces, and then puts them back together in the wrong order. Magnificent.

All in all, a lot of fun. I can see how the self-awareness and irony would bug the hell out of people, but it never grated on me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's not really any dramatic weight here - it's incredibly light in spirit and at 83 minutes pretty much flies past, but there are many worse ways to spend the time. Godard's continual use of red/white/blue and the jumpy soundtrack amused the hell out of me.

This was meant to be clever but just came across as annoying. I get it.. you think they're going to break out into song but they don't. The characters are boring and unlikeable. There's some cute moments, but they still feel contrived. I can see what this movie is trying to do.. I get it. But is it worth doing?

Forty years later, PT Anderson would keep the visual flair, strip away all the distracting gimmickry, and create something really special. Godard's a good craftsman but he needs a heart transplant, or at least a mode other than "wry".

It's better than some of Godard's other films from this time period due to the compelling actors and the obvious fun they're having. The editing is still as disruptive towards enjoyment as ever, and the complete lack of a tone neuters the satire. Leaves one with the conclusion that Godard's views on both film and woman should be left behind.

A battle of the sexes played out as a tongue-in-cheek musical comedy. It's really a blast. What stands out is the creative sound design, with exclamations of music and vivid sound effects. It moves along with lightning pace, and is often very funny. Anna Karina is lovely.

Godard doing musical comedy is certainly a damn sight better than Godard doing sci-fi (Alphaville) or war (Les Carabiniers). Like those other films, however, it's done with far too much winking irony. But in this case, it's a pretty enjoyable little romp.

Every time I watch a Godard, I try to imagine myself as if I were a teen in 1960s France, anxiously awaiting his next film. Would I be shocked? Would I be amazed? Would I be disappointed? And, ultimately, would I become more stilted in my ways and leave him behind with his childish things? Anyway, Belmondo spends another film trying to get a gal in the sack while the other guy bikes around in circles, and Anna just winks at us (as, I'm sure, does Godard).

There’s something paradoxical about Godard’s experimental style here: as it is makes for an irritating and uninviting viewing experience, but remove it and very little remains. Like having an annoying yet insanely hot girlfriend who will have you fighting loneliness if you dump her.

Godard's playfulness with form is admirable in its sheer boldness, but disregard for cinematic conventions and a desire to subvert genre do not necessarily beget quality, and despite good acting, here the broken narrative, winks to the camera (literal and figurative) and fragmented sound and editing are more jarring than charming, and in the end simply reek of pretentiousness.

Godard's hilarious spoof of the Hollywood musical, replete with fourth-wall busting that sees Godard at some of his most playful, while also acting as a rumination on gender norms and the culture that produces them. And cheeky; oh, is it ever cheeky. A sheer delight to watch, and the most purely comedic film Godard has made.

Pure fun and cute. The use of the score is great and Anna Karina's performance is charming and a show-stealer. Experimental, bizarre, hilarious, fun, and colorful. Anna Karina was (as always) phenomenal. The music cues in this were absolutely ridiculous, yet totally spot on in this film that seems to parody American musicals and comedies of the time (I love how the color palette of red, white, and blue even subtly plays into the parody). You can never go wrong with Godard.

This is the standard in which all romantic comedies should be judged, and it's an impossibly high standard to reach. It's also a "neorealist musical", which Godard claims is a contradiction in terms. The truth in the tautological title is what Godard is playfully addressing, in addition to all the biting wit and sly humour that Godard excels at. It's difficult to imagine that such brevity and intellectual weight can coexist in such a jubilant soiree, but that's a testament to its artistry.

I'm pretty torn here. Until this film, I've loved all the Godard I've seen. This one however just seems to be saying women are irrational and shameless. There's a lot to love here, especially the use of color, it's really a visual feast. Unfortunately, and what really did the film in for me, the plot kind of drags and winds up repeating itself constantly. Worth a look.

Generally accepted as the most "fun" Godard film, which it probably is, yet surprisingly it is also probably more cinematically innovative than anything he would do up until A Married Woman (which interestingly is probably the most thematically similar film in his oeuvre, almost something of a follow-up piece). It is also a remarkably perceptive examination of romantic relationships, which one tends to forget Godard was brilliant at in light of his later more purely formal/intellectual work.

This film was brought to you by the colour red, baby fever, and winks at the camera. The last line is so campy, and stupid, and unnecessary, but somehow funny? I don't know how I feel about it. I'm not entirely sure what this movie was attempting to do, but whatever it was it was doing it at top speed. It's relentless, unapologetic, ironic, self-referential, and if not laugh out loud funny, unwaveringly fun. At the same time, it's trying SO HARD to be irreverent that it shows.
