Weird, evil , gross out of nowhere filth. They had to throw in a weird from another movie entirely comic relief street wise black kid to hip up Neeson. REALLY WEIRD 9/11 reference in this. I've used weird a lot now. Where did this movie come from, I just walked to the theater and noticed a new Liam Neeson movie and he's holding a gun "WELL IM SEEING THIS TONIGHT I GUESS". A Walk Among the Tombstones is every gross episode of Criminal Minds blended together and a period piece because why not.

It's an okay Neeson actioner that is greatly benefitted by listening to the Writer's Commentary but for some reason they hid it behind a bunch of menus on the blu-ray. Honestly, it takes like 12 steps to get to it.

For its genre, it is amazing. Tense, sadistic, solid writing, Liam Neeson calling a guy a spic, what else can you want out of a thriller? Has some really black comedy too. The bad guys are so outrageously evil that you are actually rooting for drug traffickers which is quite an accomplishment. My favorite negative review from this movie: "A Walk Among the Tombstones" is, plain and simple, a Liam Neeson movie. If you think that sounds bad, don't review Liam Neeson movies you dolt!

To me, this movie could have been absolute brilliance. The creepy undertones and beautiful, mysterious suspense scenes are proof of this. Yet, this movie focuses far too much on shallow and uninteresting side plots which keep it from its full potential. Most of the cast was functional and Nelson did well playing himself, while some of the directional choices were great. What could have been greatness, turned into alright by overthinking.

Outstanding old-school crime drama throwback to the classic noirs - while the broad outlines of the plot will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen a cop movie, the devil is in the details, and in Frank's expert hands as writer and director, the movie really manages to resonate, especially in Neeson's wonderful performance (his best in years) as a flawed man seeking redemption. A gaggle of well-chosen, unfamiliar character actors in support also helps immeasurably.

A lot of crime and action films pay lip service to the idea of redemption for their inevitably broken-down and emotionally-scarred protagonists, but this film actually plumbs the depths of its main character's past trauma so that it feels earned. Of the Liam-Neeson-Kicking-Ass movies I've seen, this is by a long shot the most thoughtful, moody, and patient of the bunch.

This is not your average "Liam Neesons" jokey action flick. It's dark, dingy and downright disturbing, at times it's hard to watch. Other than that it's your typical revenge thriller noir story, competently made but forgettable. The junkies are shady, the dealers aren't friendly, Neeson plays an alcoholic in AA. The only non-pitch-black element is Neeson's friend, a homeless black teen. Of note: It's set in 1999 and Y2K is mentioned every three minutes. Nothing ever explains that.

It is very dark and very gritty and that helps Liam Neeson create a character with depth and layers. It brings a sense of harrowing realism to a film that is already filled with dark depressing rainy scenes. The chemistry amongst the actors is phenomenal. A solid film noir, with classic throw back elements to the great crime films of the past. Easily one of Neeson's best performances in the past five years. A definite must see.

Following the oh-so-underrated "The Grey" and his magnificent voice-over in "The LEGO Movie", Liam Neeson is finally back to starring in decent movies. Albeit somewhat formulaic, "A Walk Among the Tombstones" strikes all the right chords as a gritty, surprisingly evil and pretty old school noir.

Hmm... it left me with a what-did-I-just-watch kind of feeling. The story kind of fizzled, the pacing was good at first. But then suddenly there seemed to be no more mystery to discover. It was as if the movie wanted to go from film-noir to action, but then tripped and just left a big mess. Quite literally...

A movie that delivers a smattering of good moments spliced in with a bunch of blah blah cliche ho-hum drivel. Would it be wrong to want those good bits isolated - "severed" if you will - and placed in a more competent movie? Perhaps the bits could be delivered to me piece by piece and I'll put it together myself.

Fabulous start, followed by a long build up to the final scenes. Liam Neeson plays an ex cop haunted by a past who is looking into the death of local drug dealers wife. His investigation eventually roots out two psycho killers. Some of the plot points near the end are not as convincing or consistent. Music is good. Performances are fairly good. Dark atmosphere, some tension and good texture with the characters. The 12 steps voice over did not seem particularly relevant though.

It's easy to say that this story was very grave. Liam Neeson was great in this murder mystery detective story. I like that for once the Private Eye was working with some bad guys to solve crimes that were done to their families. It changed the dynamic of their relationship quite a bit. I thought the killers were really excellent too as they had a maniacal glee to the work that they were doing...

Liam Neeson delivers another enjoyable performance in A Walk Among the Tombstones. At times it can be formulaic but it's dark and thrilling. There were certain points when I got the feeling that I was watching an old school crime film. It's not going to avoid being compared to the Taken series. It gets the job done and I feel it's definitely worth a viewing. 3.5 STARS

It threatens to become endearing at times (I almost laughed when the same stock "irritating black kid" character from The Arrival and Friday V made his first appearance), but it takes itself too seriously. Just as The Fall (with Gillian Anderson) took your average episode of Law & Order and beefed up the grittiness and artistry, here is a similar experiment with the Taken/Non-Stop/Unknown genre, but it lacks that show's intelligence, care and visual beauty. Also, "Matthew Scudder"? Really?

Actually a quite good thriller, and a gritty one at that. The story is nothing spectacular, but it plays out pretty intense throughout. I could have done without the cliched boy sidekick, but Neeson manages to steal the scenes anyway, so perhaps no harm done... I said perhaps. - Good

Its difficult to watch a Liam Neeson movie nowadays without thinking it looks very similar to Taken. This 'gritty' thriller fails to captivate with a plodding storyline, uninteresting characters and a predictable conclusion. Knowing who the antagonists were was a massive problem because I found myself waiting for a twist which was never delivered. Neeson has definitely been typecast in this type of role but I can only imagine he did this film for the payday.

Although this will never be a classic, it has an intense atmosphere, with New York being more dystopic than you will ever see it. It's kind of like a Hitman atmosphere, and I like it oh so very much. Liam Neeson is good, although his potential isn't fully reached when he is casted as a sympathetic killer, if you ask me.

Left in the hands of a less assured writer, this would've come off as a complete clusterfuck of epic proportions. While it may not win him any awards, it further cements Frank's reputation for writing engaging stories, edgy dialogue and perfectly flawed characters, all of whom manage to work their way into this conflict. And props to the kid who once urged us to stop looking at his mom for landing a role opposite Neeson.

To me, this is the kind of movie that gets old even before it's over. It started out strong, and I really enjoyed the dark, brooding style. But after a while, I felt like the screenplay was on repeat and everything was just more of the same. Not exactly boring, but rather tiring. The kid sidekick is useless (is he ever not?). Overall this movie mildly entertained me, and there surely is something worth watching in here, but overall, too flat and samey for my taste.

Brutal, nasty business that has a feel of an extended Law and Order episode, less the courtroom parts. It's good, Neeson plays the "cop" well. Worth a look. FYI, there's some violence, go figure, that is kind of disturbing but most of it depends on your imagination.

For the first 45 minutes or so, this is a well-executed, appropriately icy cold neo-noir. But once hour two kicks in, it starts piling on too much clutter, too many characters, too many illogical plot threads, and too much general unpleasantness. It's ultimately pretty unsatisfying, but Neeson is good.

A Walk Among the Tombstones isn't a kill-'em-all Taken-style actioner. Neither is it some kind of man-against-the-monsters supernatural thriller like the title might suggest. In fact, at first it's hard to see where tombstones fit in at all. Because this is actually more of a gumshoe investigator's tale, a gritty cop-turned-unlicensed-detective story (based on a rough-and-tumble Lawrence Block novel). (pluggedin.com)

My 65 rating is by no means a bad thing. I think the film works as a film noir - it's dark, gritty, and the story is intriguing enough to buy into. Neeson does a great job as a hardboiled detective dealing with some demons from his dark past and the case he is working on. I think the film struggles in the acting of the supporting cast and the side story with Neeson and the Homeless kid didn't work for me. Overall, not bad, but maybe wait till it is released on Netflix to check it out.

The story goes darker than I expected, but rather than feeling gratuitous, it genuinely helps to give the movie a stronger sense of identity. This is a huge help given how it tends to lean a little too far into all of the usual noir-style detective movie beats. It does justice to its genre though, and really delivers a suspenseful mystery that, until things become much less tense and oddly paced in the climax, had me desperate to know exactly where it was going and how it would end.

Six years after a whole bunch of testosterone injections and ass kicking, Action Neeson lands a Matt Scudder adaptation. The last time there was one of these it was the mid-80's. It's looking like it'll be a loooong time before we get to see another because this one was not exactly a top tier detective movie, in spite of the source material being lauded as the best in the series, and those testosterone injections still being full strength. Good, but not good enough, Block.

if it lost all the gratuitous darkness (y2k makes a change from 9/11 i suppose but o wait there's the NY skyline) and redemption arcs everyone's obliged to cram into neeson movies these days, you're left with an idiosyncratic, niftily directed procedural where old-school hard-boiled PI neeson and his smart-mouthed, tech-savvy child sidekick encounter oddball criminals and negotiate tight scrapes and engage in buddy cop shenanigans. that'd be way cooler. groundskeeper scenes were p great though.

Less Taken and more "boring episode of cop drama #748 on cable," A Walk Among the Tombstones is only interesting when it's being controversial, or when the story finally picks up in its final quarter of running time (which is too late). Its mundanity and complete lack of originality means that its violent scenes -- often involving women -- stand out and become talking points. It has a bored lead, an uninspired plot, and very little worth seeing.
