The early part of the film suffers in two ways: the screenplay feels weak, and the narrative feels too rushed; nothing is given any time to breathe, especially the romance. Once it moved to Botswana, finally there is some patience shown in the storytelling. Oyelowo's impassioned performance propels the story while Rosamund Pike is mostly just kinda there. Most white people are stereotypical scumbags, but this is probably both intentional and accurate. Won't blow you away but it's an okay watch.

Oyelowo and Pike do fine and it's essentially an interesting story; although neither screenplay or director do enough with it. The love and political plotlines work fine together, but both feel truncated and lightweight in what is little more than an expensive made-for-TV movie. Asante has an eye for a good shot it has to be said, but despite being generally likeable 'A United Kingdom' is too toothless and undramatic to make the impact it clearly wants to.

A nice bit on history, but it felt staged and contrived at times.

A lot of what you will expect to happen through this does but its still worth a look if you're looking for this kind of drama.

Shines a light on a new and interesting story of how the Brits screwed over the non-whites. A bit like The King and I, but with less singing and dancing and a lot more politics. The romance wasn't particularly gripping to watch, but that David Oyelowo is a tall, cool drink of water and I can relate to Pike's character going through all that to be with him.

"No man is free who is not master of himself". I must have been too caught up in this real and beautiful story that I missed a (apparently) poor script and forced dialogue. I left the theatre with a humble mind and loved that this part of history was told. *Good

I was pretty bored during the first half of this, but it shifts gear from extremely cookie-cutter romance to a solid, engaging history lesson. Enjoyable and moving, but the dialog is occasionally quite forced and hammy.

You have seen this movie already. The historical part is quite interesting.

An unusual historical subject with an objectionable ideology (raising liberty above duty) fails because it has to explain too much background. I fear we have to blame the script. Plenty of the fetching Rosamund Pike, though.

At the heart of this film is a love story from across the divide but it exposes political maneuverings that are shameful. Informative and entertaining.
