Well, I know haven't technically seen this. But the guy next to me on the plane did and I'm pretty sure I caught a glimpse of Eddie Murphy and some CGI squirrels. So here we are.

Just watch Liar Liar or, better still, The Invention of Lying, instead. And then watch Beverley Hills Cop and remember when Eddie Murphy made good movies.

I often casually describe Hollywood's intense need to fetishize and exploit paternal relationships as pornographic, but after watching this movie I have a somber respect for how pornographic Hollywood is willing to be with regard to this subject. I mean, in this movie a dying dad makes a dying declaration of forgiveness to his deadbeat, literally dead, father and is reborn anew?I did not make this up. If I had, I would have made it funnier.

For a movie that tried to be life-affirming, that could not possibly have been more soul crushing.

Maybe if it was two thousand words, it would have been twice as funny, and rated an 18.

Fine enough for some mindless watching. I didn't think it was as bad as everyone else is making out.

This feels like a Dhar Mann video, or some sort of uplifting advertisement. It's obviously not good but I knew what I was getting into. Sometimes it's so unfunny that it becomes funny.

It's just not enough to make an interesting movie. It really limits more than interests or thrills.

a good lesson, very early a predictable ending, some unnecessary humor, but altogether,i really liked it, because of the meaning behind it. i think eddy acted good and honest.

If you tell people that only have seen movies from the last two decades that Eddie Murphy used to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world and played in some of the most classic comedies of the 80's, no one would believe you. Has the same premise as Jim Carrey's Liar Liar and a shitload of other movies: Bad person has tables turned on him. Learns to be less bad. The end.

This film is actually a new age version of the classic "Angry Black Man" story - his father was distant and eventually left him and his mother for someone else, this made Eddie emotionally distant and closed off too and thus continues the cycle as he has a wife and child who he basically ignores and won't truly commit to by continuing to live a selfish near-bachelor life.
The rules we are taught of when the tree will shed leaves are ignored out of convenience as the film progresses

I found the concept amazingly good and the film doens't deserve (all of) the negative comments. Absolutely, Murphy made much better films, but he made much worse too, remember "Meet Dave" et cetera.

It started out good but unfortunately by the middle I was getting bored. I found the ending to be completely unsatisfying. Eddie Murphy is a good actor, in my opinion he just needs to have the right script.

It is so sad to see one of my childhood favorites being part of so weak films. Murphy is still sort of charming and should be doing better films. This is simply a weaker version of a weak Jim Carrey film.

Yep, a really annoying attempt to make one of those fantasy comedies that kind of worked in the 1980s and 1990s -- or with Jim Carrey as the leading man. Eddie, I love you but you are bringing me down.

A second-rate Liar Liar and a third-rate Groundhog Day. This movie is rife with cliche and unoriginality. Though in her two scenes, Ruby Dee is very effective and transcendent. She belonged in a better film, really.

A comedy with a message. Eddie Murphy shows his usual facial expressions, but in a reasonable amount because of the drama element. The cause of the whole accident may seem stupid at the beginning, but it gets better with remaining time. Clark Duke created an interesting character here, as well as the old lady. Apart from the message, everything here is pretty much average. Another thing is, that a quite deep drama part turned out better than the comedy part, which is on a rather low level.

For a little while there, with Tower Heist, I thought the quality would pick up for Murphy's films, but with A Thousands Words it unfortunately still did not. The drama parts work okay - no problems there. Just too bad that I can't say the same for the comedy.

A THOUSAND WORDS is a shameless ripoff of LIAR LIAR, but it fumbles right off the bat; Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) is hardly unsympathetic enough for the central conceit of the film--limiting him to a thousand words before the tree he is metaphysically bound to becomes barren and dead, like him--to work. The trite, unfunny script, Murphy's relatively weak performance (and several very bad ones), and the strange shifts into drama--which this might have better as--all sink it like a stone.
