It's an interesting movie, but I must say I didn't find it all that enjoyable. The movie has its moments of brilliance. The contrast between the beginning and end of the movie is powerful. The movie also presents a very grounded story, one that is perhaps a bit too real. However this grounded story is told with too many awkward silences and long shots, with a couple abstract scenes for good measure. It also felt like it lacked a sense of what brought the change we see at the ending.

I really appreciated this film, and especially the well-fleshed out character of Rebecca. The conflict within her was apparent and poignant. The ending did feel somewhat forced as the film sought to tie things off, with the older daughter seeming too articulate. Also, the husband character felt almost tacked on, and this was my biggest struggle with the film and the central relationship, particularly as their struggle carried on through the film.

Another well directed movie by Poppe, who uses his own experience as he focuses on the difficulties of being a war photographer. Binoche is very good as a mother who wants to make a difference even though it hurts the ones she loves. Her selfishness provokes, and we experience the effects it has on her family and their relationship. An intriguing and emotional family drama.

Horrors of war and life could've been worked out together better. Not a single conflict to make the movie go interestingly. A very good ending though.
