Sprawling saga is a little too messy and disorganised, provoking some restlessness in the middle passages - this screams for the mini-series treatment to give its intriguing cast of characters (and the social milieu they inhabit) room to breathe. Still a modestly powerful achievement, especially in the first third dealing with the fallout of a particularly brutal crime. Does an effective job of portraying the tragedy of vicious cycles of violence and revenge.

An emotional family portrait painted in slow, sparse strokes. Long, but not immense, provocative, but not intimate; yet it's moving and artful all the same, and the ensemble cast is without a weak link.

A very well-made family and crime drama with believable performances, memorable moments and great camerawork. It reminded me of Yi Yi or some of the films by Kore-Eda and I would recommend it to any fan of Asian cinema.

Very decent drama, but I didn't love it as much as many others seem to do. I don't know actually why, cause all aspects are very good; it looks great and the acting is top, especially from Yi-wen Chen, and the story is touching without being sentimental. Guess my main problem was that the movie covers so much time, I felt some parts only scratched the surface and are left undeveloped.

Trite topics, but genuine about their exposition. A touching family drama.

humanistic, intensely emotional, gritty, gripping, and a hose that sprays shit: that's cinema

The movie has this issue where everyone is needlessly poetic to the point of unbelievability, lacking any ineloquence you'd expect in such a premise. Its hamfisted portrayal of an average suicide victim as someone who is constantly profound takes away much of the humanity from said victim. However, this is a beautifully shot film that ignores the cause of violence and instead explores its consequences. Despite the script, the acting is top notch and it ties together its premise gratifyingly.
