A Stranger Is Watching

Rip Torn plays a creepy and vicious nutbar who murders the wife of a magazine editor, and then comes back a couple of years later to execute a meticulously planned kidnapping of his daughter and new fiance. Torn and Kate Mulgrew are both decent, elevating what could've been pretty sleazy material to the level of genuine suspense, though all of the police procedural stuff was uninteresting. A solid but unspectacular flick.

A killer and hostage taker uses the underground of the New York subway to hide his victims. Decent and more of a thriller than a horror.

Nothing really clever or original here. Instead I'm just gonna suggest alternate stage names for Rip Torn: Drop Fall, Kick Trip, Cut Bleed, Run Tire, etc. etc. There ya go; the most useless review ever.

A mixed bag containing some of the tiredest cliches (such as the violin crescendo leading up to the "oh it was just the cat" jump-scare, and the overly dramatic and unlikely ending) but also some really unexpected plot turns and blind alleys, which keep the film engaging and at least mildly suspenseful. The directing and acting are generally sub-par, but not so bad that the whole thing falls apart or anything.
