A Special Day

1977
Romance, Drama

The film is set during the late 1930s: the occasion is the first meeting between Mussolini and Hitler. Left alone in her tenement home when her fascist husband runs off to attend the historic event, Sophia Loren strikes up a friendship with her homosexual neighbor Mastroianni. As the day segues into night, Loreon and Mastroianni develop a very special relationship that will radically alter both of their outlooks on life. (imdb)

From an overview it's a simple, restrained chamber drama, never reaching too far beyond the viewer's expectations, but its modest content is devised with wisdom and sensitivity. By fault of social and historical circumstances beyond its control, A Special Day's homosexual theme seems anachronistic; at once daring and long overdue. In spite of that inescapable discomfort, the gay character is respectfully portrayed.

Two very interesting stories, one about the ever present aura of fascism and the way it distorts people's perspectives, and one about two somewhat lonely people coming together. The two aspects are even well tied together, each informing the other in key moments. But the way they're layered on each other feels backwards to me, as the structure gives the fascism primacy and puts the intimate personal story as a foreground episode, while I'd prefer these two characters to be the primary focus.

Ettore Scola combines nicely homosexual, woman married because of kids and made a special day when Mussolini and Hitler met each other. The story flowed slowly, like their life, but grew nicely towards the end. In the end nothing change and still everything. A sexy woman in grey dress and women's man a fruit. Nice contrast!

There's some good stage business about the uncomfortable host-guest relationship between apartment-house neighbors, but the movie is mainly just bread-and-butter Italian humanism, beginning with one of those squalid family breakfast scenes: the boy smoking furtively in the john, the girlie picture hidden under the pillow, the teenage sexbomb doing her whorish makeup, and the bedraggled mother bumping her head routinely on the low-hanging kitchen lamp.
