Drama, Sci-fi

Based on legendary science-fiction author Philip K. Dick's own experiences, A Scanner Darkly tells the darkly comedic, caustic, but deeply tragic tale of drug use in the modern world. The film plays like a graphic novel come to life with live-action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process -- a method known as interpolated rotoscoping, first employed in writer/director Richard Linklater's 2001 film "Waking Life" -- to create a haunting version of America, seven years from now. I love this. Just as Dick's novel, Linklater's adaptation is undiluted brilliance. I love the interplay between Downey Jr. & Harrelson, both hysterically funny. I love that the rotoscoping technique communicates the distortions of the characters' minds. I love that the story blends trippy sci-fi with heartfelt commentary. And I love the levels of emotion Ryder brings to her part. I, in fact, love everything about it. It might even be Keanu's best (only legitimately good?) performance.

At first it seems gimmicky, but you get used to the rotoscoping, and indeed there are some pretty impressive things being done with it. The near-future setting is realized perfectly, and in combination with Linklater's humanizing skills the movie is harrowing and offbeat. Individual scenes almost seem arbitrary and isolated, but together they provide subtle character progression. By the end nothing is what's expected.

Drug addiction seems to be a theme in my current viewing, and I think I've liked this, paranoid, rapidly spiraling depiction the best. The rotoscoping is fun to watch, and Keanu Reeves seems to have wandered into another part tailor-made for him.

A bit slow to begin with, but once you get used to it it's very mesmerizing with it's stylish live-action animation and wacky humor. I especially liked the suit the drug police wear, which makes them constantly shift apperance - makes you wonder why not more people become schizophrenic. A really interesting take on the tragedy as well.

I watched this film to the end because a) I love Philip K. Dick, b) I like Richard Linklater, c) cool visuals, man. Notice how none of those reasons include "because it was interesting!" or "because I couldn't wait to find out what happens!" I blame the screenplay, which lacks the connective tissue to make this a film, rather than a bunch of disjointed chronological events.

Unfortunate directorial decisions (first among them being the decision to animate) and a kind of wooden quality leave the reader familiar with the book wondering what might have been. It's difficult to avoid the conclusion that the material demanded a more skillful director to effect the translation to the cinematic medium. The virtues of the movie derive from the novel, yet the film also caused me to think that perhaps the book is not as adaptable as I (and clearly the filmmakers) had presumed.

Significantly flawed, but that sometimes plays to this movie's advantage since the entire film is supposed to be strange and not altogether there. An amazing pseudo-ensemble cast with standouts Harrelson and Downey Jr who make this film a lot more fun to watch than it should otherwise be.

Very good film in a lot of aspects. The way it's graphically done is really great and something new. It takes a few minutes to get accustomed with it, but then it's a real fun to watch. Also the dialogues used here are great, hilarious sometimes, really genius other times. Acting was great to. All that together makes this a great film! May be a bit confusing at times though, but great plot.

This is a good film, but I didn't enjoy it at all. It coalesces a lot of the ugliest, most horrible things about drugs (in fact, it seems didactic, yet it has a depth that separates it from something as trite as Requiem for a Dream). As someone with experience in that area, I found this movie completely miserable, and the end was heartbreaking.

As sad and affecting as science fiction gets, Linklater has finally moved forward as a filmmaker, using state of the art technology and marrying it to his classicist trust in improv actors. A treastie on drug addiction but also effectively denouncing the dehumanizing involved in the current war on terror, its also a bouncy, often hilarious tale of a man torn apart by outlandish bueracracy and a social pecking order.

This film is stunning. It's small, and it won't make sense to many people, but it touches me right to my core. The interplay of government, policing, and drug use in the complete destruction of a human being is incredibly moving to watch, and the writing, taken directly from Dick's novel, just rings so truthfully and beautifully that I can completely forgive when it preaches or diverges. And the portrayal of drug thinking and developing psychosis are painfully honest. A rare film.

Keanu Reeves' best acting performances ever were in this movie and in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. In both films, he played a disaffected stoner who could barely function in normal society. Coincidence? Harrelson and Downey Jr steal many scenes with their druggy twitchiness.

Claustrophobic and paranoid. The rotoscope art style makes everything feel just the tiniest bit slippery, like if you reach out too far it'll all come apart, and I can't imagine the film being the same without it. I also don't think I will ever watch it without crying at the end.

With its original, druggy visuals, disorienting sci-fi plotting and razor-sharp dialogue, "A Scanner Darkly" is definitely a joint worth having. Although it eventually succumbs to the pulling-of-the-rug conspiracies common to sci-fi scenarios and it doesn't pack much of an emotional impact, it remains a witty and stylized tale of drugs and paranoia, featuring undoubtedly my favorite Robert Downey Jr. 'snarky asshole' performance.

This is the type of role that fits Reeves perfectly. Melancholy, introverted & understated. He pulls it off well here. The visual style is not everyones taste, but I liked it a lot & felt it added to the films psychosis elements. It sticks quite well to the source material too & does it no injustices. Recommended.

Given that it's based on a complicated Dick novel about drug induced paranoia, this dark comedy fares rather well. It has that brilliantly unnerving Fear and Loathing-vibe: You're never quite sure if the interacting characters are joking, or really have jumped the cliff, descenting into complete madness. The roto-scoping is a brilliant choice (if made of necessity), adding to the feeling that, if there ever was such a thing as reality, the characters in this film will never ever get near it.

An entertaining take on Philip K Dick's drugs novel of the same name. It works well - better than the book, I'd say. The animation technique of shooting the film as normal then producing a 'painted' copy of each frame gives the film gives a beautiful "not-quite-right" feeling which drives home the theme of the movie very successfully. No performances stand out particularly, although Keanu is fine. Worth your time, particularly if you're a fan of the novels of PKD or of Linklater's other work.

Too many scenes are just filler, showing us the stoner culture and drug effects that we've already seen plenty of. The time could be better spent exploring the film's themes a little deeper. I didn't hate it, but it definitely needed more fleshing out. The rotoscoping was great when it was necessary (the hallucinations, the morphy suits) but looked odd during the normal parts. Very trippy both with the plot, the characters, the animation, and the wild neo-noir feel. I think the animation worked far better for this story than a normally shot movie would have felt because it emphasized the world of a drug addict while still allowing the cast to play their characters. A completely unique animation aesthetic as far as I know does well to complement the oddball nature of the film. Good character performances are chiefly what makes this enjoyable. The plot is less of a mind-screw and more just elaborate, made harder to process due to it existing in a vaguely established reality. Not a fan of the cell-shaded look, but it works and I don't resent it; though I think I'd have auto-enjoyed it more if it was either straight up animation or live-action. Knowing PKD, I'd be surprised if the book made as much sense as this.

Perfect presentation with a labyrinthian use of animation. Frequently were we led down the rabbit hole, only to be straightened out by what was right before our eyes, so bewildering is the angular yet free-morphing rotoscoping style. Then we have the plot, which speaks for itself, I mean the guy wrote Blade Runner. Cochrane - underrated. Harrelson - overdid the obnoxious drug oaf. Ryder - understandably semi-present & RDJ limbers up for Iron Man's dialogue tempo sans the tweaking edge.
